This 1977 trio session reunites jazz bassist Ron Carter with pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Tony Williams, the rhythm section from Miles Davis's second great quintet. The Penguin Guide to Jazz has called this Carter's best album; a collection of hard driving, improvised acoustic jazz by three of the best players in the business.

The album includes three of the bassist's originals in addition to the reimagining of the Miles Davis standard Stella By Starlight as a waltz and Hancock's evocative Dolphin Dance, all played with a unity of purpose that elevates the music to another place.

This reunion of Miles Davis' mid-'60s rhythm section (bassist Ron Carter, pianist Herbie Hancock, and drummer Tony Williams) has its moments but is not particularly memorable. Performing three of Carter's songs, one apiece from Hancock and Williams, and the standard "Stella by Starlight," the solos are fine, but on the whole, little special occurs; the magic is missing.
