"Centipede Hz", the 10th Animal Collective album, follows the widely celebrated "Merriweather Post Pavilion" (2009) and it's the first since "Strawberry Jam" (2007) to feature all four original band members: Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist and Deakin. As the album's opening drum crashes and radio interference immediately make clear, Animal Collective have made their most widescreen and fully realized music to date. The album is a panoramic set of songs that shimmer with the confidence and wonder of Animal Collective's unique inner logic and the luminous warmth of their sound world.

Animal Collective have many, many strengths but brevity has never really been one of them. Until now, that is, because their M.O. for the follow-up to 2012’s "Centipede Hz" was "no B.S, get in, get out material". Recorded at the Hollywood studio where The Beach Boys created "Pet Sounds", and inspired by "Cubism, Dadaism, and the distorted way those artists viewed the world", "Painting With" is every bit as ambitious as previous Animal Collective records. And yet, out of the jumble of complex polyrhythms, psychedelic synth effects and hyperactive vocal harmonies, the trio have conjured a set that's flab-free and packed full of pop hooks.

“What have we become?” Avey Tare sings in an irrepressible hook, shouting the question in a way that exclaims we might still become something more. The song’s slow-motion finale feels like a fantasia vision of what’s to come—a quieter place where we can thrive together, not apart. This is the beautiful and redemptive saga of the Animal Collective condensed into one unforgettable suite, a song for holding fast even as the world spins ahead, ever faster.

Time Skiffs’ nine songs are love letters, distress signals, en plein air observations, and relaxation hymns, the collected transmissions of four people who have grown into relationships and parenthood and adult worry.
