These 1957 sessions were the first Jimmy Smith did with horns after his recording debut the previous year. With the calibre of the top-rank musicians involved – Smith, the first to translate Bird’s innovations to the organ, altoist Donaldson, the blues-drenched Bird follower, and both Mobley and Byrd contributing some thoughtful blowing of their own on tenor and trumpet respectively - the overall results were rewarding.

Miles Davis' recordings from the years of 1951-1954 are often overlooked for a number of reasons. Davis had a somewhat erratic lifestyle at the time, and these recordings do not feature the first 'classic' quintet. Even though Davis did not record nearly as often as in later years, what was recorded is quite outstanding.

A stunning piece of jazz history, reissued exactly as it originally appeared – right down to the 10' LP format! The record is one of the classic early bop sides that Miles cut for Blue Note, and it features a smoking quartet with Horace Silver on piano and Art Blakey on drums. Titles include 'Take-Off', 'The Leap', and 'Weirdo' – and the cover has this cool image of Miles blowing against an abstract expressionist painting!

Recorded over three sessions in 1957, when Thelonious Monk was leading a band that included John Coltrane, this historic meeting of two legends was not released until 1961 due to contractual issues. By that time Coltrane was a household name, leading his own band, at least as famous or even more so than Monk. This album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.
