Inception is McCoy Tyner's debut album, released on Impulse! in 1962. His trio members on this session are Art Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, all three working outside the confines of John Coltrane's quartet. Four of the six songs on this recording are Tyner originals; Effendi, the lovely ballad Sunset and the title tune have all been called "standout pieces" by JazzTimes.

One of the turning points in the career of John Coltrane came in 1965. The great saxophonist, whose playing was always very explorative and searching, crossed the line into atonality during that year, playing very free improvisations that were full of passion and fury.

Released in January 1965 by Impulse! Records, "A Love Supreme" became one of the most acclaimed jazz albums of all time and has been widely regarded as Coltrane's masterpiece. This BD reissue features the original "A Love Supreme" album along with the Quartet's only live performance of the suite at the Antibes Jazz Festival in 1965-oft-bootlegged, and some alternative takes, includes long-rumored sextet performance of the opening movement with Archie Shepp and Art Davis is a flat-out revelation.

Mark Howe Murphy was an American jazz singer based at various times in New York City, Los Angeles, London, and San Francisco. He recorded 47 albums under his own name during his lifetime and was principally known for his innovative vocal improvisations. "Rah" is his 1961 studio album, arranged by Ernie Wilkins. This was Murphy's first Riverside Records album, and he is supported by an orchestra including such luminaries as Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Urbie Green, Ernie Royal, Clark Terry and Jimmy Cobb.

"Newport '61" is a live album by Quincy Jones that was recorded on July 3, 1961 at the Newport Jazz Festival. With trumpeter Joe Newman, altoist Phil Woods, trombonist Curtis Fuller and tenor man Eric Dixon as key soloists, this ensemble could hold its own with most of its contemporaries. Jones' arrangements were colorful and distinctive, and the musicianship of the orchestra was quite impressive.

A pivotal album not only in John Coltrane's career but also in the evolution of jazz, the adventurous 1966 outing "Ascension" consists of a single, 40-minute long composition split over the two sides of the original vinyl. Coltrane is part of a seven-piece horn section (which includes Freddie Hubbard) with McCoy Tyner on piano, Art Davis and Jimmy Garrison on bass and drummer Elvin Jones. This release includes both takes recorded by Coltrane and his musicians, known as "Edition I" and "Edition II", previously available individually.
