Future Shock is pianist Herbie Hancock's thirty-fifth album and a million-selling Platinum-certified disc. It was Hancock's first release from his electro-funk era and an early example of instrumental hip hop. Much of the album was initially composed by the team of avant-garde bassist and record producer Bill Laswell, and keyboardist and producer Michael Beinhorn, and played on tour by their group Material in 1982.

This latest release consisting of live and studio recordings transcends obvious genres and challenges all generic boundaries…dub, North African, drum’n bass, reggae vocals, noise, and much more. Produced by Bill Laswell, "Sound System" follows where Herbie Hancock’s "Future Shock" left off. This experimental masterpiece bursts with even louder techno-pop brilliance. Hancock is joined by acclaimed musicians including Foday Musa Suso, Nicky Skopelitis, Wayne Shorter, Webster Lewis and more. It reached the Top Ten on Billboard’s Top Jazz Albums and includes the thrilling hit “Hardrock”. The album also won the Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.

From Pop, to Punk, to ambient, to Jazz, Ivarsson kept searching and learning. A true musical nomad, Ulf Ivarsson became an acclaimed producer, composer, and bandleader. He discovered Bill Laswell through a fellow bassist (and mentor) when he was in his teens.

Spirals , the slow reveal, cyclical but eventually coming to a point . ‘Realm of Spells ‘ is for me the point . Maybe the last time I will get to work with Bill. For me personally, this record embodies and contains a lot of the basic approach I had right from the beginning , especially in regard to playing the bass. The circumstances of our trip led to me using a Fender P bass for the first time in years. All the early PiL stuff plus Full circle with Holger and Jaki was played on Fender P. I was taken back to that beautiful naive beginning . At that juncture some pristine mathematical truth shot like a ray of vajra light from deep space.
