This 1970 hard bop session from drummer Elvin Jones showcases his quintet consisting of George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Frank Foster on tenor sax and clarinet, Wilbur Little on bass and Candido Camero on percussion. Foster and Coleman contribute three of the original songs here; Jones himself wrote the fourth original tune. The fifth song is a cover of the jazz standard Yesterdays by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach.

This star-studded affair includes music legends Freddie Hubbard, George Coleman, Ron Carter and Anthony Williams. Influenced by his experience with the Miles Davis Quintet, the album featured provocative solos, tonal textures and rich harmonies. Included on the album are the now standards, “Maiden Voyage,” “The Eye of the Hurricane,” and “Dolphin Dance.” In 1999, the album was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame.

Booker Little, Jr. was an American jazz trumpeter and composer. He appeared on a number of recordings, both as side-man and as leader. Little was closely associated with Max Roach, but also performed with John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy and was strongly influenced by Sonny Rollins and Clifford Brown. This was Booker Little's last album, recorded shortly before his premature death at the age of 23.

Maiden Voyage is the fifth album led by jazz musician Herbie Hancock, and was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder on March 17, 1965 for Blue Note Records. It was issued as BLP 4195 and BST 84195. It is a concept album aimed at creating an oceanic atmosphere. Many of the track titles refer to marine biology or the sea, and the musicians develop the concept through their use of space and almost tidal dynamics. The album was presented with the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999.
