Traditional Romani folk music from Russia and Eastern Europe with an element of flamenco and jazz. By turns passionate and melancholic.

I discovered Costel Nitescu in 2006 at a guitar festival in Patrimonio, Corsica. I’d never heard of him before, but when he took the stage with a different band after my trio’s set, I enjoyed his playing immediately. In the up-tempo numbers, he displayed stunning virtuosity and an irrepressible joy. And in slow pieces, his sensitive improvisations and great tone were equally impressive.

Gypsy Strings was conceived to display the impressive talents of London Concertante’s leader Adam Summerhayes and Bulgarian fiddle-player Emil Chakalov. In stunning new arrangements of traditional gypsy tunes seen from a totally different angle as well as a selection of original compositions, the two soloists demonstrate their technical agility and improvisational skills as they duel for the crown of ‘violin supremo’ in a flamboyant programme of virtuoso ‘jousting’, all with the backing of London Concertante’s twelve-player string section.

After numerous recordings and concerts with great musicians (Angelo Debarre, Thomas Dutronc, Bireli Lagrène, Stéphane Sanseverino, Stochelo Rosenberg, Lulu Gainsbourg…), violinist Marius Apostol presents his new album: StradiMarius Quartet after the very successful "Bohemian jazz project" in 2011, his first album as a leader.

Here, on Jacob’s Dream, Koby Israelite demonstrates a gentler, more sophisticated side. “My grandmother bought me a piano when I was three and I started playing by ear,” says Koby. “When I was six I started to have piano lessons but I never liked it - I guess I had the wrong teacher for my rebellious personality! I got into music seriously when my parents finally gave up and bought me my first drum kit. I was very much then into rock music. Later on, in my late teens and early twenties, I got into jazz and classical music.”

Speakeasy Streets is an eclectic mix of the old and new sounds. The band brings Swing and Gypsy Jazz from the Prohibition era, and infuses this with Hip Hop (and a punky edge). They appropriately bring the term, “Gyp-Hop” to the table.
