The Cuban-American pianist Horacio Gutiérrez was a favourite of London audiences in the 1970s and 1980s, and a regular guest of the LPO. His numerous collaborations with Klaus Tennstedt, then the orchestra’s music director, always sparked excitement, but were recorded on disc on only one occasion: in this recording of two milestones from the Romantic repertoire, newly remastered, where Gutiérrez’s athletic playing really shines, and where the musical chemistry between performers is evident.

Anton Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony occupies a special place in the composer’s oeuvre, not only because its daring harmonic progressions and distinctive instrumentation were well ahead of their time but also because, as far as we know today, he was unable to complete this piece, a composition he had begun working on as early as the summer of 1887. Bruckner died on the 11th of October, 1896, while still working on this final masterpiece.

This 1960 Somerset Records release captures Sir Adrian Boult conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra in two of Tchaikovsky’s most evocative orchestral showpieces. The album pairs the famous Fantasy-Overture Romeo and Juliet, which distills the essence of Shakespeare’s tragic romance into one of the composer’s most beloved scores, with the lesser-known but equally dramatic Hamlet—a dark, psychologically charged tone poem that mirrors the prince’s descent into obsession. Boult, a conductor renowned for his architectural clarity and deep affinity for British and Russian repertoire, brings a uniquely disciplined energy to these lush Romantic works, highlighting Tchaikovsky’s genius for melodic storytelling. Originally released in both mono and stereo formats, this authoritative pairing remains a testament to Boult’s masterful command of the London Philharmonic.

It was premiered in Minneapolis on November 21 of 1941, performed by the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos. After the premiere, Mitropoulos wrote to the composer, "The performance of your symphony was for me one of the highest artistic moments of my career. God bless you, dear artist, and give us more of your creations."

The Golden Cockerel is an opera in three acts, with a short prologue and an even shorter epilogue, composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, his last complete opera, before his death in 1908. Its libretto written by Vladimir Belsky, is derived from Alexander Pushkin's 1834 poem, The Tale of the Golden Cockerel. The opera was completed in 1907, and premiered in 1909, in Moscow, after the composer's death. Apart from Russia, it has often been performed in French, as Le coq d'or.

Galina Ustvolskaya was a profoundly original composer, unrivalled in the extremism of her style, who was largely ignored during her lifetime. Fiercely independent, Ustvolskaya created highly expressive, even violent music that sounds like the work of no other composer and reveals no distinct influences, while often being imbued with religiosity or spirituality. Her music has been described as having the ‘narrowness of a laser beam capable of piercing metal’.

The Times praised the ‘explosive chemistry between this conductor and orchestra’ while The Arts Desk declared ‘the LPO has a real treasure in Canellakis.’ Together, they continue the Orchestra’s rich tradition of powerful Tchaikovsky performances, offering a recording that is both steeped in legacy and brimming with new life.

With all the classic symphonic, melodic, and ballet elements of a Tchaikovsky composition, this Manfred is haunting, brilliant and seamless, as good a Tchaikovsky symphonic performance as you could want, and the most enjoyable.
