World-renowned Indian musician Ravi Shankar's 'Shankar Family & Friends' was originally released in 1974. Produced by George Harrison, this was one of the first album releases on Dark Horse Records.

One of the early works of art created for the West by the Grandfather of World Music. This album stands as an early attempt to teach the curious western listener about the complexity and beauty of Indian music. Composer Alan Hovhaness provides some rather thorough liner notes describing the systems involved in Indian classical music (with the focus clearly on Hindustani forms), and goes into some detail on the finer points of the four ragas performed (Maru-Bihag, Bhimpalasi, Sindhi-Bhairavi, and Pancham-se-Gara, which is played during the piece titled "Dadra," actually a tala).

George Harrison's legendary record label Dark Horse Records releases a brand new remaster of Indian sitarist and composer Ravi Shankar's 1974 Indian classic music revue Ravi Shankar's Music Festival from India. Its presentation was the first project undertaken by the Material World Charitable Foundation, set up the previous year by ex-Beatle George Harrison. Long a champion of Indian music, Harrison also produced an eponymous studio album by the Music Festival orchestra, which was released in 1976 on his Dark Horse record label.

That a Western violinist should choose to pair with the illustrious Ravi Shankar is not in itself surprising. The violin was fully absorbed (and tuned much lower) by the Indian classical music establishment as early as the 19th century, and in contemporary times produced performers such as Dr. L. Subramaniam, Lalgudi Jayaraman, and the highly experimental L. Shankar. However, aside from being a highly accomplished recording, the original West Meets East – there would be two additional Menuhin-Shankar collaborations – elevated world music to new heights. Menuhin had championed Indian music in the West for years before learning how to play it. His sensitivity to the material is demonstrated on "Sawara Kakali," particularly during the tremendous duet that closes the track.

Gandhi is a 1982 epic biographical film based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, a major leader in the Indian independence movement against the British Empire during the 20th century. A co-production between India and the United Kingdom, the film was directed and produced by Richard Attenborough from a screenplay written by John Briley. It stars Ben Kingsley in the title role. The biographical film covers Gandhi's life from a defining moment in 1893, as he is thrown off a South African train for being in a whites-only compartment and concludes with his assassination and funeral in 1948. Although a practising Hindu, Gandhi's embracing of other faiths, particularly Christianity and Islam, is also depicted.

India's Most Distinguished Musician In Concert is a 1962 live album released by Ravi Shankar. It was recorded 19 November 1961 during one of Shankar's early seminal American performances, at UCLA. Supporting musicians are Kanai Dutt on tabla and Nodu Mullick on Tamboura.

Improvisations is a 1962 LP album by Ravi Shankar. The opening piece is based on music from Shankar's score for Satyajit Ray's 1955 movie Pather Panchali with flutist Bud Shank playing in Indian style. Shankar composed "Fire Night" influenced by the 1961 Los Angeles fires and the song features jazz musicians Shank (flute) and Gary Peacock (bass) improvise over Indian percussion instruments.
