Rhino released a really nicely packaged and wonderfully appointed version of Van Morrison: Moondance that I reviewed back in 2013, and they're distributing this new(ish) version officially from Warner Music Group, but this may be one of the easier "double dip" choices for fans even if this newest release doesn't offer the packaging or bonus content that older one offered. The allure here is a new Atmos mix, which is pretty formidable sounding, along with some other interesting mixes that weren't available on the first Blu- ray release, including (for those who might be interested) the instrumental accompaniments without vocals added.

Ex-boxer turned showman, Screamn’ Jay Hawkins was born Jalacy Jay Hawkins in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1929. He was a talented singer-songwriter, musician and actor and during the sixties became infamous for his macabre stage performances that would plague him for the rest of his professional career. Hawkins recorded his signature song “I Put A Spell On You” in October 1956 for Okeh Records, reputedly while drunk, and later claimed that he didn’t even remember making the record. It might explain the wild screaming and cannibalistic grunts that secured his fame and led to his pioneering shock rock stage show. He reprised the song in 1967 with a funky beat which found a release in the States on Decca Records coupled with a rework of the Shades Of Blue “You’re An Exception To The Rule”. The ’67 version features here as the title track to the 1977 album released on the New York Versatile label. Now extremely sough-after this up tempo long-play fuses reimagined standards with new Hawkins compositions and includes the 1973 single “Africa Gone Funky” featuring the legendary Skull Snaps as the backing band, an appropriate choice given Hawkins’ smoking skull-on-a-stick, named Henry!

According to AllMusic, this album firmly established Picket's "stature as a major '60s soul man," launching four major crossover hits.

The album is a collection of covers of New Orleans classics, played by a major figure in the city's music. Dr John's Gumbo was released in 1972 and is in many ways a tribute by Dr. John, aka the Night Tripper, to his hometown of New Orleans. It features excellent interpretations of New Orleans traditionals ("Iko Iko", "Tipitina", "Junko Partner" and "Stack-O-Lee") and contemporary R&B written or played by the likes of Huey Piano Smith ("Blow Wind Blow" and "Huey Smith Medley") and Earl King ("Big Chief" and "Those Lonely Lonely Nights").
