Plenty of magic here – a record with a different sound than some of Sarah Vaughan's earlier work – but one that's still pretty great! The backings here bring in plenty of strings, and a bit of voices – going for a full feel that's a bit like some of the country soul albums of the period – although Sarah herself is far from country, and nicely poised throughout. A number of the tunes are standards, but they have a different sort of feel in this setting – and Vaughan's vocals float nicely over the top, tying the whole thing together on tunes that include "That Old Black Magic", "Carefree", "Separate Ways", "Mary Contrary", "I've Got The World On A String", "Love Is A Random Thing", and "Sweet Affection".

When she got a hold of quality songs, no one could out sing her. This set has several examples of Vaughan's immense talent, including the old standard "I'll Be Seeing You," which Vaughan transforms into a vocal masterpiece. Notice how her singing coasts elegantly over the varied rhythms of the bop classic "Green Dolphin Street" almost as if she were a member of the horn section.

From 1961-1962, Sarah Vaughan recorded two albums while accompanied by just guitar and bass. Her 1962 outing for the obscure Reactivation label (with guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Joe Comfort) is hard to find, as is her earlier set with guitarist Mundell Lowe and bassist George Duvivier.

This double recital, recorded on 9 November 1969 at the Berlin Philharmonic, takes place at a very special time in Sarah Vaughan's life. To everyone's astonishment, the small, awkward 45-year-old gave one of the most masterful stage performances of her career that could be captured on tape. In almost two hours she silenced all misgivings by proving how her approach to music remained eminently topical.
