Following his acclaimed recordings of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas, concertante works by Stravinsky, Bartók and Martinů, and chamber music by Bartók and Szymanowski, Frank Peter Zimmermann now turns to one of the towering works of the violin repertoire: Edward Elgar’s Violin Concerto.

Joined by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and principal conductor Edward Gardner, Zimmermann brings both technical command and remarkable sensitivity to this deeply personal score.

Often described as a “Mount Everest” for violinists, Elgar’s concerto combines immense scale with extraordinary intimacy.

Dedicated to the legendary Fritz Kreisler — who famously told the composer, “You have written an immortal work” — the concerto has remained central to the repertoire since its première in 1910.

Beneath its virtuosic demands lies music of striking emotional depth, shaped by constant shifts of tempo, colour and mood.

Zimmermann’s interpretation captures both the grandeur and vulnerability of the work, navigating Elgar’s long lyrical lines and subtle emotional transitions with rare naturalness.

The result is a performance of concentration, imagination and expressive freedom, beautifully supported by Gardner and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Available in 24-bit/192kHz high-resolution audio, this recording reveals the full richness of Elgar’s orchestration and the remarkable detail of Zimmermann’s playing with exceptional clarity and depth.
