On her debut EP, Sugar & Spice, Hatchie's ultra-catchy take on dream pop was so perfectly realized that it was hard to tell how she could improve – or expand – on it. Though her approach isn't as novel as it was before, Harriette Pillbeam's music sounds better than ever on Keepsake. She spends the first half of her debut album showing just how much she can change things up while keeping the honeyed melodies and soaring choruses that are vital to the Hatchie sound.

After a decade of collaboration, master guitarist John Stowell and the towering Bay-Area saxophonist, Michael Zilber, along with the dynamic bass/drum duo of John Shifflet and Jason Lewis, have developed a sound widely hailed as conversational, empathetic, and richly intuitive. For their third Origin release, they offer another set of melodic and engaging modern jazz compositions, drawing equally from modern swing, post-bop and their deep life experiences. "…an intimate quartet affair, marked by the kind of soulful, instinctual interplay that fans have come to expect." JazzTimes.

This album should have been titled The Phoenix! It has died and been reborn many times for various reasons. It proved to me that the music made me go on. It’s relentless pushing to be in the world, to be born, made me continue on when I had nothing left. Each of these songs came out of my soul. Out of an experience I had in my life. Each song is like a short story of my experiences. I have certainly been broken by life many times. I feel that from those broken places the light of creativity emanates. Each experience changed me. Each song healed me in some way. Many times I had so many feelings, I was overwhelmed and the songs emerged on their own. They floated to the surface so I was able to express them in words and music. Sometimes the words came first, and sometimes the music came first. And in the end the words and music flowed together to create a tapestry of feelings. I hope these songs will float over you and fill your heart and soul with the magic of music. – Veronica Rose

On the heels of their self-titled EP in late 1998, Jimmy Eat World released their breakthrough album Clarity in 1999 and took up the mantle of emo poster boys. Deftly produced by Mark Trombino and the band, Clarity mixes introspective balladry with power-chord punk rock, elements of chamber pop, and subtle doses of electronica to create a remarkably unique album. The only single to garner radio play, the hard-edged yet poppy "Lucky Denver Mint," was also featured on the soundtrack to the Drew Barrymore film Never Been Kissed, and while the album reached an audience that far surpassed Jimmy Eat World's previous efforts, it was by no means a commercial smash hit.

Recorded in December 1985, J MOOD heralds the start of a second phase in Wynton’s career and the formation of a new band featuring the “J Master,” Marcus Roberts, on piano. Wynton’s evolving collaboration with the “J Master,” which continued through the early 1990s, has already become a landmark in recent jazz history. Bob Hurst’s impeccable bass lines and Jeff “Tain” Watts’ mercurial drumming complete the line-up.

The group's follow-up album to a pair of hit singles ("Long Cool Woman," "Long Dark Road") tries for the harder sound that sold those singles. Romany's cover art deliberately recalls its immediate predecessor Distant Light, but otherwise the two albums are rather dissimilar. For starters, this is the album that the group cut during the short-lived tenure of Mikael Rickfors as lead singer he's more of a weighty, David Clayton-Thomas type singer than Allan Clarke was, much more of a hard-rock crooner, as is evident on the version of David Ackles' "Down River" and the self-consciously heavy rocker "Slow Down."

When one thinks of Max Reger's organ music, his intensely chromatic and densely textured fugues are the first examples to come to mind, especially his imposing Fantasy and Fugue on B-A-C-H. Yet there are several smaller, simpler pieces of a more casual nature that are sampled on Robert Benjamin Dobey's 2006 album, The Intimate Reger. Not all the selections here were intended to be informal or low-key: the opening Consolation, Op. 65/4, and several of the chorale preludes are typical products of Reger's elaborate invention and serious-minded counterpoint, and because of their religiosity, they seem more appropriate in a solemn liturgical setting than on a recital of light music.

A seminal groover from Wynd Chymes – a group with a groove that’s as catchy as their name! The Atlanta combo only cut a few records, but all of them are great – and this debut does a great job of mixing modern soul with harmony vocals – all with a tight funky undercurrent that’s right in the best mode of some of the bigger RCA soul acts of the time – particularly Keni Burke or Michael Wycoff! A few mellower cuts mix in with the uptempo numbers, creating a nice balance that almost reminds us of late 70s Earth Wind & Fire – particularly in the way the horns are fused into the rhythms – and titles include “Checkin Out Your Stuff”, “Love Has Come Again”, “Stylin & Profilin”, “Girl It’s Alright”, “Ain’t It Good”, “Do It”, and “Arrival”.

House and Land is a North Carolina based duo whose guitar, fiddle and banjo abilities transform traditional folk forms from the familiar to the strikingly fresh. Their feminist interpretations of lyrics reflective of another time and attitude is both empowering and illustrative. Identifying with many songs’ message of close relationship with the land and principles of stewardship, the duo’s emotional connection is palpable in their hauntingly beautiful vocal harmonies. There is a reason these songs had and have deep resonance in rural communities which is made clear when delivered with such potency.

Vocalist Laura Dickinson delivers a shining snow globe of a Christmas album here. Her voice ranges between Disney-esque and Andrew Sisters swing, as she mixes traditional with new here. Of the latter, she is cozy and coy on the TV show “Christmas Is Starting Now” from Phineas and Ferb as well as on the bouncy “Peace and Joy” from “Sofia the First.” The brass is bright as Dickinson boops through “Happy Holiday/The Holiday Season” and she gets jivey on a New Orleansish “Let It Snow!”. Kyle Palmer’s horn teams up with her for a languid “Love , You Didn’t Do Right By Me” while getting coy with trombonist Steve Trapai on “(Everybody’s Waiting For) The Man With The Bag.” She saves best for last, with a lovely duet with pianist Alan Stenberger for an aria of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and is breathy with guitarist Andrew Synowiec on a lovely “Auld Lang Syne.” Lots of poses under the mistletoe here.
