Guitarist Ronnie Earl recorded the majority of the instrumental release I Feel Like Goin' On live in the studio with no overdubbing. As one of the best contemporary blues guitarists around, Earl naturally shows off his prowess on these 11 cuts, with sturdy assistance from Dave Limina on piano/organ, Jimmy Mouradian on bass, Lorne Entress on drums, and special guest guitarist José Alvares. On the whole, I Feel Like Goin' On is tight, passionate, and gritty, especially on the soul-blues of "Hey José," "Blues for Otis Rush," "Howlin' for My Darlin'," and "Travelin' Heavy." While the majority of the album is uptempo, Earl does slow down the pace on the beautiful ballad "Donna" and the traditional gospel-flavored "Mary Don't You Weep," featuring the only vocal appearance on the disc, by the Silver Leaf Gospel Singers.

On their essential new album, The Quireboys amazed themselves. "The new music has surpassed all of expectations" admitted long-term guitarist Guy Griffin. “It’s the most diverse album we’ve ever done” added fellow six-stringer Paul Guerin. And for a band celebrating its 35th Anniversary in 2019 that’s saying something. Amazing Disgrace is the sixth Quireboys’ album in seven years but quality over quantity remains the mantra. Eleven typically frank and familiarly evocative rock and roll classics soundtrack a band at the peak of its creative powers.

Sharing the Covers is a clever title from a clever band - a band clever enough to not allow themselves to succumb to their wittiness anywhere on this light and lively collection of other people's songs. Casting their net wide, the quartet cover contemporaries and classics, modern and vintage tunes in equal measure, their choices continually telegraphing their good taste. Happily, their execution demonstrates their skill. Although Chatham County Line doesn't reinterpret many of the songs - even a nimble reading of the Ventures' "Walk-Don't Run" doesn't turn the tune inside-out - they nevertheless imprint these largely familiar tunes with their personality. Witness their version of Tom Petty's "You Don't Know How It Feels"…

Several years in the making, vocalist Greta Matassa's 6th recording for Origin is a loving assemblage of her quintet's best material in recent years. A documentation of the work she and her wonderful band have developed on stage over countless performances, and dedicated to her late father James Goehle. A painter and jazz lover, Goehle's faith in and enthusiastic support of his daughter's talents as a teen, inspired and sustained her career in music. The painting on the cover is his portrait of Greta's mother. Greta has been a dominate fixture on Northwest stages for decades and with more recent touring, including sold out dates at New York's Dizzy's Club, and tours of Russia, Singapore, Hawaii, and Japan, Greta's sound is continually reaching new audiences.

"Writer" is the debut album by Carole King and was released in 1970. King already had a successful career as a songwriter, and been a part of The City, a short-lived group she formed after moving to Los Angeles in 1968. Tracks on the album include "Up on the Roof" which was a #4 hit for the Drifters in 1962, and "Child of Mine", which has been recorded by Billy Joe Royal, among others. The album did not receive much attention upon its release, though it entered the chart following the success of King's next album, "Tapestry", in 1971. Reviewers rate it positively if not as highly as "Tapestry", one noting that it was the "most underrated of all [her] original albums". And, in a review that also covered "Tapestry" in Rolling Stone, Jon Landau wrote, "Writer was a blessing despite its faults" and that though the "production was poor", King herself made the album "very worthwhile".

A few short years ago, John Mailander was known for his work in bluegrass music here in San Diego in numerous band projects. The fiddler got together with some stellar friends for a solo CD in 2014, Walking Distance, recorded in Massachusetts, then he relocated to Nashville. He has remained an in-demand studio recording artist, and his new album is Forecast.

"Myth and Romance" is an eclectic collection of works for violin and piano by Polish composers. Performed by violinist Marta Szlubowska and pianist Svetlana Belsky, most of the nine tracks are duets - two are solo piano and one is solo violin. The five composers whose music is included on the album are Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937), Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), Grazyna Bacewicz (1909-1969), Marta Ptaszynska (b. 1943), and Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941). Both artists are obviously masters of their respective instruments and began their collaboration in 2017 when they discovered their shared love for turn-of-the-20th-century repertoire.

First, to be clear, this is certainly not the only Drifters album you'll ever need, and it may well be one of the last ones you'll ever need. This is fare from the latter-day Drifters. By the 1970s the Drifters had splintered into several separate touring groups, one of which was led by Johnny Moore. Moore, recognizing that the group had always been popular in Britain, moved there and enlisted Bill Fredericks, Gant Kitchings, and Butch Leak to form yet another incarnation of the group, which then signed to Bell Records in 1973.

The second of pianist James Williams' three Magical Trio releases features him interacting with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Elvin Jones on trio renditions of three of his originals (including "A Portrait of Elvin") plus four fresh standards. The spontaneous results are quite stimulating and the matchup between these masterful musicians (who do not play together very often) on the straightahead set is quite successful.

Fantastic reimagining of classic Metallica tracks by the great classic rivetheads, Die Krupps. Of course, what some of these other reviews fail to acknowledge is that you need to enter into this CD with an open mind…

While there is no substitution for picking up a good handful of Silver's classic LPs for Blue Note, this introductory disc will fit the bill for listeners just looking for a sampler collection. Taken from a period covering the mid-'50s up through the '70s, Silver's Jazz Profile disc touches on both hits ("Song for My Father," "Finger Poppin'") and relative obscurities ("Safari," "Barbara"). In between there are plenty of the pianist's patented soul-groove solos, some of the best hard bop committed to wax, and a few stellar examples of early boogaloo jazz. And add to this contributions by such jazz greats as Joe Henderson, Art Farmer, Ron Carter, and Art Blakey.

Inspired by places visited and some not yet seen, Perpetual Motion has created Dance of Two Souls, an album that overflows with sunshine, joy, happy memories, romance and just enough drama to keep it real. Violin and guitar dance together beautifully in the hands of Josie Quick and Tom Carleno (Perpetual Motion) plus a pair of guest artists! Nine of the thirteen tracks were composed by Quick, two by Carleno, and two are original arrangements. The album was produced by Quick and Carleno and the guest artists are Blake Eberhard (electric and acoustic basses) and Christian Teele (drums and percussion).

The nation that gave us both Fellini and Nina Rota also has an excellent jazz scene (I hope it's not news to you) and so perhaps it's inevitable that we get such projects as "Night On The City" from Paolo Fresu, "La Dolce Vita" from Bruno Tommaso & Enrico Rava. This project doesn't actually use too much music from the Truffaut films' soundtracks (plus a few spoken-word excerpts) – it's the films in their enitirety that serve as inspiration to the composer. Rita Marcotulli can be a straightforward jazz pianist & composer (check out her trio with Palle Danielsson and Peter Erskine on YouTube!) but a as project leader she loves to expaad into pop, rock, folk, world etc. So this record needs to be listened in full, with the quirky transitions between various styles and approaches. Lots of pleasures, big and small, to be found. – G.A.
