"The Pointer Sisters" is the self-titled debut by the Pointer Sisters, released in 1973 on the Blue Thumb label. The album yielded the hits "Yes We Can Can" and "Wang Dang Doodle" and became a success based on word of mouth after heralded performances at The Troubadour in Los Angeles and the Helen Reddy Show. The album peaked at #13 on the Billboard 200 and reached #3 on the R&B albums chart and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in February 1974.

"Totally Hot" is Olivia Newton-John's 9th US and 10th international studio album. Released in November 1978, it became her first solo Top 10 (# 7) album since 1975's "Have You Never Been Mellow". Dressed on the album cover all in leather, Newton-John's transformation in Grease from goody-goody "Sandy 1" to spandex-clad "Sandy 2" emboldened her to do the same with her music. The album's singles "A Little More Love" (# 3 Pop, # 94 Country, # 4 AC), "Deeper Than The Night" (# 11 Pop, # 87 Country, # 4 AC), and the title track (# 52 Pop) all demonstrated a more aggressive and uptempo sound for Newton-John.

Considering how Cage the Elephant brought home the Best Rock Album Grammy for Tell Me I'm Pretty in 2017, it's a bit startling that its successor, Social Cues, abandons the rough-and-tumble aesthetic producer Dan Auerbach brought to the band. Auerbach helped Cage the Elephant emphasize the bash-around garage elements lurking within their music, a sensibility that is absent on Social Cues.

Cliff Richard has utilized a lot of guises and personae as a performer '50s rock 'n' roller, '60s pop/rock vocalist, Christian musician, '70s rock vocalist, and, since the 1980s, a general U.K. entertainment institution, with a knighthood. But how many listeners ever thought of him as a singer/songwriter? The 31st of February was only ever issued in England, and is built on the work of Cliff Richard as a singer/songwriter. He was never known for his composing during the 1960s, and he proves amazingly good at it here; perhaps he was in the same boat as George Harrison, having stockpiled a brace of excellent original songs that just weren't appropriate for use in his earlier situation, but whatever their chronological origins, the original songs, mixed with some well-chosen outside compositions, make The 31st of February a bit stronger than his solo albums of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

What immediately strikes the potential buyer about this British release is the unusual program: the Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, of Jean Sibelius is paired not with Tchaikovsky or Beethoven or any of its other usual partners, but with the Violin Concerto "Concentric Paths" by Thomas Adès, a work that has been recorded only once before. Rising German-Italian violinist Augustin Hadelich addresses the question in his own notes, writing that "CD programs that I like the most are ones where the pieces are connected, but in a subtle way."

Recorded over three nights in August 1972, Deep Purple's Made in Japan was the record that brought the band to headliner status in the U.S. and elsewhere, and it remains a landmark in the history of heavy metal music. Since reorganizing with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover in 1969, Deep Purple had recorded three important albums – Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head – and used the material to build a fierce live show…

Please To See The King is the second album by Steeleye Span, released in 1971. A major personnel change following their previous effort, Hark! The Village Wait, brought about a substantial change in their overall sound, including a lack of drums and the replacement of one female vocalist with a male vocalist. The band even reprised a song from their debut, "The Blacksmith", with a strikingly different arrangement making extensive use of syncopation. Re-recording songs would be a minor theme in Steeleye's output over the years, with the band eventually releasing an entire album of reprises, Present – The Very Best of Steeleye Span.

With the return of these stereo recordings by David Oistrakh and Lev Oborin (made in Paris in 1962), many collectors will find an automatic first choice. This new Philips set presents these accounts in fine digital transfers and has the benefit of having all 10 sonatas placed sequentially across four CDs. The performances are exceptionally fine, sometimes not as dramatic as Schneiderhan's (DG), it's true, but always intensely musical and natural.
