In Their Words: “I lived a lot of different places while I was growing up. My dad worked for the airlines while I was young and we moved around a lot. Rich or poor, lucky or unfortunate, people are the same everywhere. It has never made sense to me that some have and some don’t. I wrote “Things That Matter” after my daughter was born. She has taught me a bunch, but this more than anything: We are all we have. People are at their best when they are sharing the thing they love. In the poorest places happiness is still possible in the connection of two souls.” — Guy Forsyth

In the spring of 1957, John Coltrane had gone through two years of artistic growth so concentrated it was astonishing even in the jazz world, where compressed musical development is far from unknown. As the other horn in the Miles Davis Quintet, Coltrane had moved from virtual obscurity to acclaim as the tenor saxophone innovator of the decade. Although major stylistic departures were to come, Coltrane was at a peak of the probing lyricism and strength of his middle period. With the interestingly contrasted baritone saxophonists Cecil Payne and Pepper Adams, and a rhythm section of great smoothness and swing, Dakar is a gem in the Coltrane discography.

Breaking Orbit's debut album "The Time Traveller" is a captivating mix of eclectic soundscapes, driving polyrhythms, euphoric vocal melodies, tribal drum breakdowns and heavy grooves - taking the listener on an epic 60-minute journey. The band’s overall sound is heavy and chunky with the bass sitting unusually high in the mix, comparable somewhat to Tool’s Aenima and Lateralus. This foundation is complemented by the sort of lilting cleans and leads that Dead Letter Circus love to employ and held together with a strong focus on ambitious experimentation that fans of Karnivool’s Sound Awake will love. Capped off with a stunningly powerful vocal performance, the album boldly establishes a unique character built on intense feeling and a clarity of vision.

This set has been a favorite with critics since it was issued in 1979. Vlado Perlemuter studied Ravel's music with the composer. His approach is more colorful and dramatic than that of many other pianists. All the rigorous classical form Ravel used comes through, but so does a powerful musical personality. Just try, for example, the Toccata from Le Tombeau de Couperin, where Perlemuter builds up to a thrilling climax. The sound is more resonant than ideal, but this is still the best recording of Ravel's piano works ever made. Perlemuter's own Vox mono versions are poorly recorded; stick with the Nimbus edition.

Based on the fantasy tale (which bears the same title) written by William Hope Hodgson, "The House On The Borderland" carries symbolically the listener through pages of real terror where it's told about the gloomy presences infesting an old house. Echoes of Lovecraft's style for a thrilling soundtrack precariously and perpetually poised between suggestive melancholy and abysmal fear of the unknown.
In this album Nostalgia were: Mathias Grassow, Carsten Agthe, Rüdiger Gleisberg, Luigi Seviroli.

It caused a stir when it was announced: Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree and No-Man fame) was to release his first-ever full-length solo album. The first question to pop up was: why? After a couple decades of activity under his belt, and two handfuls of bands and projects past and present (including several solo outfits, like Bass Communion), why would he release an album under his own name, and what would that album be like? Well, as it turned out, Insurgentes is basically a Porcupine Tree album in which Wilson wrote all the songs and made all the decisions, including the one to not include all current members of Porcupine Tree in the project.

This quartet outing with pianist Tom Ranier, bassist John Leitham, and drummer Louis Bellson is one of altoist Herb Geller's finest recordings. Geller, whose long period in Europe has resulted in him being somewhat forgotten in the U.S., has actually improved through the years and was even stronger in the mid-'90s than he had been in the mid-'50s. For this date he contributes five originals (including a tribute to Lenny Bruce, "Stand-Up Comic," during which Geller sings) and performs six mostly lesser-known standards, highlighted by "The Peacocks," which has its composer, Jimmy Rowles, sitting in on piano. This CD is easily recommended to bop collectors, for it finds Herb Geller at the peak of his powers.

Rare reissue of historic recordings by Scott LaFaro. New DSD remastering. Scott LaFaro left us a very small number of recordings due to his untimely death in 1961. He was a genius who developed a revolutionary way of playing the bass. Whether recorded live or in studio, these recordings are all worth listening to. This album consists of three ABC Stars of Jazz TV probrams as well as a very rare rehearsal session at Bob Andrews' Recordville, the record store belonging to Andrews, the famous devotee of the West Coast jazz scene. All are 1958 performances while LaFaro was with the Victor Feldman group. Recommended for fans of Scott LaFaro!
