Even as they still mourn the loss of their beloved frontman, Scott Hutchison, Frightened Rabbit are celebrating his music. This year marks the 10th anniversary of their landmark sophomore album, The Midnight Organ Fight, and the band is marking the occasion with a star-studded tribute record. Tiny Changes features a full top-to-bottom reworking of the classic Midnight Organ Fight by a number of musicians who either personally knew Hutchison or held his music dear. Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard recently shared his version of “Keep Yourself Warm”, while other early previews included Manchester Orchestra and Sarah Silverman & Katie Harkin covering “My Backwards Walk”, and Julien Baker and Biffy Clyro separately taking on “The Modern Leper”.

With Hypocrisis B Records launches its jazz collection, and what a beautiful manifesto this album is! Recorded live with the same attention as ever in a mythic place for jazz creation, the Dynamo in Pantin, the Pujuila Quartet, gathered around the eclectic clarinettist Florent Pujuila, draws an intimate course around the emotions of its composer, sailing with both virtuosity and passion between jazz, rock, and contemporary music. Four musicians with very different backgrounds are united in The Pujuila Quartet, created by French clarinetist Florent Pujuila: Fabrice Martinez, Bruno Chevillon and Eric Echampard. Different musical styles are here meshed together, from jazz to rock, from classical to electro music, all of which the musicians have had a chance to tackle throughout their individual careers. The Pujuila Quartet s musical language is at the crossroads between contemporary music, Mediterranean influences, and jazz- recognizable through the rhythmic structures and extensive solos. Energy and strength are tamed by vertiginous rhythms, mingled with playful timbres and rich sounds.

This honor was validated by the band's listing on the Pandora Station by the same name.

Hammond B-3 boss Dr. Lonnie Smith ends up on yet another new label with Too Damn Hot!, the follow-up to his thoroughly enjoyable – if curious – Boogaloo to Beck outing from 2003. This studio set places the organist in the company of two fine guitarists – Peter Bernstein (lead) and Rodney Jones (rhythm), and alternating drummers Greg Hutchinson and Fukushi Tainaka. The two-guitar format is lovely in that it presents a wide array of colors and harmonic textures to the proceedings.

Thomas Heywood plays a program of organ transcriptions and organ classics upon the Kotzschmar Memorial Organ at Merrill Auditorium, Portland City Hall, in Portland Maine. Internationally acclaimed organ virtuoso Thomas Heywood enjoys an outstanding reputation as one of the world’s finest concert organists. As the first and only Australian musician in history to live as a professional concert organist, Heywood is celebrated as “an acknowledged master” for his spoken introductions and truly unique ability to make the greatest music of all time come alive on the King of Instruments. He has an amazingly comprehensive repertoire of over 5,000 works. Not confined to the “organ world,” Heywood’s phenomenal success in reaching out to the vast concert-going public has made the critics boast that he “reincarnates Edwin H. Lemare,” the greatest concert organist of the twentieth century.

This magnificent album by Polish trumpeter/composer Tomasz Stanko includes the rest of the music recorded at the same session, which produced the superb "Music 81" album. As with all great and prophetic Jazz Masters, Stanko's music was evolving constantly and by the time this session was recorded in 1982, he was ready to leave behind the avant-garde/Free Jazz/experimental music, which dominated his first period (late 1960s to late 1970s) and gradually move forward towards new things, which would include mostly Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz-Electronic experiments, which of course were all as advanced and adventurous as anything else he made earlier. That second period, which lasted roughly the whole decade of the 1980s, is well documented by the albums released during that time, each and every one of them indisputably a masterpiece in retrospect…

This recording is an excellent introduction to the distinctive sound world of Catherine Lamb (b. 1982), who studied with James Tenney and Michael Pisaro, in that it documents a recent large-scale piece that epitomizes her compositional aesthetic, Prisma Interius IX (2018), and was recorded under the composer's supervision. "I have been attempting to describe, in more elemental terms, the perceptual roles between musicians who are activating interactions in harmonic space. Overlays Transparent/Opaque (2013) was an initial attempt towards showing forms aside phenomenological clarities in which to enter from relational and therefore parallaxical points, in this case through shifting overlays.

This 20-track CD includes all of the songs from Rose's 1970 album Love, a Kind of Hate Story and his self-titled 1972 Playboy album Tim Rose, which is an entirely different record than the self-titled album he made for CBS in 1967. Note that this reissue, sequenced by Rose himself, does not follow the original running orders of the two albums, or even present one after the other, but mixes tracks from the two together. The effect of that strategy is questionable, but if you find it jarring, it's easy enough to reprogram the albums in their original running order (which is given in the liner notes). Love, a Kind of Hate Story is a middling album, produced by Shel Talmy, and a little heavier on the "rock" in folk-rock than Rose's 1960s recordings were…
