A hypnotic journey through the psychedelic folk music of Seirios Savvaidis, To The Mother Of Gods testifies that music, through repetition and drone, can take us outside ourselves to a liminal space beyond thought and rationality.

Swedish filth-practitioners BASTARD GRAVE returns after four years with an absolute headclobber “Diorama Of Human Suffering”. Stripping away the traditional Swedish chainsaw sound, BASTARD GRAVE has never sounded more disgusting, repulsive and yet an intriguing aural stormstrike resulting in a swampfuck of a bludgeoning Death Metal record. Recorded, mixed & mastered once again with Ulf Blomberg (Crawl, Age Of Woe, Inevitable End, etc) and the piercingly afflictive artwork by Stewart Cole (Contaminated, Noisem, Scorched, etc).

Mostly covering Shearing's latter-day work for the Concord Jazz label, this edition of Verve's Compact Jazz series isn't one of their best. And while there are certainly some fine cuts here ("Con Alma," "Cheryl"), fans will inevitably start pining for all those classic '50s and '60s dates the pianist cut for Capitol.

Robert Fuchs (1847-1927), whose pupils included Wolf, Mahler and Sibelius, remains a shadowy yet potent figure in the musical history of late nineteenth-century Vienna. A superficial hearing of his determinedly large-scale First and Second Piano Sonatas can suggest ill-digested influences, notably those of Brahms and Schubert, but closer scrutiny brings its rewards. In both sonatas an outwardly safe teutonic surface discloses much modulatory adventure and many surprising twists and turns in the musical argument. Listen to the First Sonata's Allegro and you will hear how Fuchs's transforming imagination turns a Schubertian bias (more specifically the ghostly presence of the third movement trio from the Op. 42 Sonata in A minor) to such haunting advantage.

Au contraire, Weingartner est de ces compositeurs qui ont su trouver à la tonalité mélodique des voies propres à se développer et à se perpétuer. Mais Weingartner n’est pas qu’un continuateur, il est un authentique créateur dont l’œuvre se conservera non pas pour sa valeur historique mais pour sa simple beauté ; je ne vois rien d’autre qui justifie une écoute. Le quatuor Sarastro est parfait.
