This LP has what all outstanding Prince LP's have: tremendous range. Prince, at a very early age, demonstrates the ability to master different genres of the day, which few artists of that era (Stevie, Curtis, EWF) were able to pull off. There are great cuts to please any Prince fan. Of course, there is "I Wanna Be Your Lover," the unique cut with the killer guitar hook. Then there's "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad," a nicely-paced guitar-pop ditty with a great solo. Move next to "Sexy Dancer," a synth-driven disco cut. Then of course, there is the original "I Feel For You," an uptempo, stripped-down piece which is just as enjoyable as the Chaka Khan version.

Guitarist Ralph Towner (who also plays a bit of piano) teams up with the highly sympathetic bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJohnette for five of his originals on this 1978 date. The music unfolds slowly but logically, and Towner's quiet sound displays a lot of inner heat. Highlights include "Waterwheel" and the 16-minute "Batik." Well worth listening to closely, at a high volume.

The material on this date falls comfortably within the realm of what the ECM label is famous for; meticulously recorded, lyrical chamber music (and the requisite lush reverb is ever present). In addition to leader Erskine, the playing and writing of English pianist, John Taylor, is featured. Taylor is an excellent technician with considerable harmonic agility; his approach is heavily influenced by Bill Evans via Keith Jarrett. Bassist Palle Danielsson completes a very sympathetic, highly interactive rhythm section. "Evans Above" and "Pure & Simple" are by Taylor, whose writing tends to conjour an English pastoral aesthetic and often has elements of so-called new age piano music, a left hand ostinato for example. To Taylor's credit, however, his compositions never get as predictable as most music in that genre. The same is true of writer Vince Mendoza, whose tunes are also featured on this recording.

A decade on from their last album and almost half a century since their formation, Senegal's Orchestra Baobab return with a timeless set of classic, swaying tunes fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms and African tradition in the group's trademark style. Recorded locally in Moussa X's Dakar studio, the new recordings sound fresh and yet reassuringly familiar, retaining the ripeness of the sound that made Orchestra Baobab a legend but interpreted with a vigor and vibrancy, and with a few twists, that are vital and captivating.

Between 1971 and 1978, Reddy hit the Top 40 fourteen times with her smooth, airy light-pop singles, including the number ones "Delta Dawn," "Angie Baby," and "I Am Woman." As her hits petered out toward the end of the '70s, her acting work increased, including roles in Pete's Dragon, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Airport 1975.
