After five years away from the recording studio, the Legendary Shack Shakers don't sound as frantic as they did back in the days of Cockadoodledon't, but their commitment to bad craziness below the Mason-Dixon line is as strong as ever, so the title The Southern Surreal is more than fitting. Instead of going for the breakneck psychobilly of their formative days, in 2015 the Shack Shakers continue to explore the swampy sound that dominated 2007's Swampblood as they ponder the more forbidding side of life in the deep South. Bassist Mark Robertson and drummer Brett Whitacre lay out a deep, implacable rhythm as guitarist Rod Hamdallah spreads echo-drenched guitar figures over it all and Col. J.D. Wilkes howls and moans his tales of booze, bad living, the walking dead, and other unhealthy phenomena of life along the riverbank (and occasionally tosses in some high-powered harmonica work). The band also brings along a few high-powered guests (including former Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison and sax player Ralph Carney, best known for his work with Tom Waits), and Billy Bob Thornton steps up to the vocal mike for a brilliantly creepy spoken word piece.

Dutch rock band the Cats were popular during the late '60s and early '70s, releasing a bunch of English-language hits and full-length albums during this peak period. Founded in the mid-'60s in Volendam, the Netherlands, the band was comprised of Cees Veerman (vocals, guitar; born October 6, 1943), Piet Veerman (vocals, guitar; born March 1, 1943), Jaap Schilder (guitar, piano; born January 9, 1943), Arnold Muhren (bass; born January 28, 1944), and Theo Klouwer (drums; born June 30, 1947). the Cats made their album debut in 1967 with Cats as Cats Can, and at least one new album followed each year until the swan song release The End of the Show (1980). Some of the band's most popular hits include "Times Were When" (1968), "Lea" (1968), "Why" (1969), "Scarlet Ribbons" (1969), "Marian" (1969), "Magical Mystery Morning" (1970), "Where Have I Been Wrong?" (1970), "One Way Wind" (1971), "Let's Dance" (1972), "There Has Been a Time" (1972), "Let's Go Together" (1973), "Maribaja" (1973), "Rock 'n' Roll" (1973), "Be My Day" (1974), and "Come Sunday" (1974).

Naïve's Vivaldi! features Canadian contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux in selections from Vivaldi operas and an excerpted version of his Stabat Mater, RV 621, limited just to the alto arias. All of this material is drawn from Naïve's standing catalog of Vivaldi recordings with the Ensemble Matheus, to which Lemieux has been a star contributor. Her work in duets with Philippe Jaroussky is duly noted for its resultant and memorable fireworks; some of these moments are included, along with a little bit of her work alongside popular soprano Sandrine Piau.

For Marsalis Music's second DVD release, label founder Branford Marsalis and his quartet have been captured in a complete performance of John Coltrane's 1964 masterpiece A Love Supreme. This legendary suite, which tenor saxophonist Marsalis included on his label's premier release, Footsteps of Our Fathers, was performed at Amsterdam's Bimhuis during a European tour in March 2003. “We felt that we were pretty much done with A Love Supreme when we went to Europe, but my manager wasn't done with it,” Marsalis recalls wryly. “After hearing us perform the suite at the Bottom Line, she insisted that we had to film it so she approached Pierre about the project and he agreed.”

Born in the Bluestown of Chicago in 1951, Tino Gonzales, grew up with the soul sounds of Black music. Blues, R & B, Jazz, and Soul have all contributed to his musical foundations. Having served his apprenticeship with a wide range of blues and jazz greats, he eventually set off on his solo Blues career in 1985. Tino Gonzales is to the blues what Carlos Santana is to Rock music ! Coming from "southside" of Chicago, this one of a kind Chicano cooked his special blues in New York with a touch of funk, a spicy latin groove and a jazzy beat. As a Mexican dude, a spanish blood runs in his veins. Tinos’ blues is hot and so different, a real blast in the today blues landscape. Fluid, cool and sexy that’s Gonzales touch.

Described as a "Georgian Janis Joplin," Nino Katamadze, from Batumi, is one of Georgia's most renowned singers. Defining the exact style of Katamadze's music is difficult; Nino calls it "art jazz." She sings mostly about love, sometimes spontaneously composing songs onstage."Musical motifs appear in my head unpredictably," she explains. In 1999, Nino Katamadze founded her 4 piece band - Insight. Since then they have been performing across Georgia, in Moscow and in some European countries. Band’s repertoire includes a lot of originally arranged Georgian folk songs. The strong side of the band is Nino’s vocal and extraordinariness in both music and stage performance.
