Neurosis have toned their bruising metal image down to more of an enjoyable, atmospheric musical journey. Although still containing punishing riffs on occasion, the group is intent on creating slow and melodic pieces of work, especially on the lengthy and melancholic title track. Clocking in at close to 12 minutes, the song opens with a methodical guitar and drum beat before its tempo ebbs and flows in a vein of possible progressive rock-meets-heavy metal à la Anathema. It's sonically scene-setting as lead singer Steve VonTill gives hushed vocals in the middle portion before letting loose near its coda. Another benefit is the throng of tension from start to finish. "Burn" veers from this format as VonTill tends to wail in a nu metal format. "Shelter" contains more a folkish, prog-driven Pink Floyd hue with mixed results…

For me, this release took time to sink in because there is so much going on. Not just shredding but dynamics and melody that gives your brain a workout. Then it clicked - holy crap this is an incredible collaboration of sonic nirvana! Every song on "Culture Clash" is killer and has its own personality. Whether rock, fusion, techno, rockabilly, or prog-metal, these tunes are clever and well thought out with arrangements to die for. The disc clocks in just over 57 minutes, all instrumental, and each band mate wrote three songs. You can get lost in these songs and shouldn't focus too long on one instrument because the sum is better than its parts.

Robert und Clara Schumann waren mit Sicherheit außergewöhnliche Eltern nicht nur nach den Maßstäben des 19. Jahrhunderts. Vor allem fällt auf, wie viel Zeit Robert insbesondere seiner Tochter Marie, der Erstgeborenen, gewidmet hat. Marie, Elise und Julie sind die Töchter, für die Schumann kleine Stückchen komponierte und mit denen er auch musizierte. Und das nicht nur auf Kleinkind-Niveau. Diese CD ist eine entzückende Rundschau über die Stücke und Melodien, die Schumann mit seinen Mädchen entwickelte und lässt beinahe Schumann sche Familienatmosphäre wiedererstehen. Wie nicht anders zu erwarten, sind eine ganze Reihe von Ersteinspielungen auf dieser CD vertreten.

Style fantastique (CD-16280) is the 2010 live album of the ensemble Le Concert Brisé lead by William Dongois (cornetto), and the ensemble's fourth recording with the label Carpe Diem. The term Style fantastique refers to a 17th century style of composition and interpretation that is characterized by its very free form, its elements of improvisation and a highly dramatic arrangement. The album holds the six sonatas op. 3 for solo instrument and continuo by Giovanni Pandolfi-Mealli (1620 - ca. 1669), printed in Innsbruck, Austria in 1660. The individual pieces are named after musicians who, together with Pandolfi-Mealli, were employed at the Habsburg Court in Innsbruck, for instance, Antonio Castello (sonata "La Castella").

Wieniawski is one of those Romantic composers beloved of violinists and tolerated by everyone else. Judging from the number of performances and recordings, his music’s allure is fading fast, which is a pity because much of what he wrote is very attractive and at least entertaining. This is particularly true of the Fantaisie brillante on Gounod’s Faust, full of good tunes and effective contrasts. Violinist Vadim Brodski has orchestrated the piece very idiomatically in the best sense: it’s actually better sounding than Wieniawski’s own symphonic writing.

Procession formed in Turin in 1972. They came out that same year with an album titled "Frontiera" for the small Help label (an RCA subsidiary). Musically the style is rather acoustic; a lot of space is given to guitars. It can be easily described as a hard prog LP. After two years of silence, the band reappeared with a new line-up (Capra, Girardi and Capello were substituted by bass player Paolo D'Angelo and horns player Maurizio Gianotti), and a new recording deal, this time it's Fonit that releases their second album "Fiaba", their best work…

Ron Carter has always been way more than a straight jazz bassist – especially in the past few decades, where his collaborative spirit has taken him into territory we never would have imagined early on in his career! Here, he works alongside writer Danny Simmons – whose words inform most of these tracks, read by Simmons himself. Carter plays these amazing basslines that are vivid and illustrative while Danny reeds – and a few tracks change up the approach slightly, one with a reading from Liza Jessie Peterson, two more with trio performances that feature Donald Vega on piano and Russel Malone on guitar.
