Beginnings was originally put together by Atco as a double LP to encourage new fans who'd missed them to buy the group's first two albums, and proved so successful that it was kept in print on CD by Polydor when it acquired the group's catalog…

'Just One Mo' Time' is Jasmine's second volume of classic recordings by the Isley Brothers. The first release back in 2010 was 'You Make Me Want To Shout' (JASCD561) which contained 23 recordings from the very beginning of their career. This new set kicks off with the self-penned, 'Open Up Your Heart' and a bizarre, but fun, doo wop styled rendition of Victor Herbert's 'Gypsy Love Song' from his operetta 'The Fortune Teller'. The song is also well known via Mario Lanza.

This release is the natural evolution of Alma Afrobeat Ensemble's unique brand of modern Afrobeat, and their most complete, comprehensive and eclectic work to date. 'Monkey See, Monkey Do' combines all the elements of classic Afrobeat created by Fela Kuti and Tony Allen while maintaining the band's polyrhythmic musical style. The album was recorded, produced and mixed in Barcelona by Fernando Redondo and Aaron Feder.

Swedish avant pop trio Miike Snow returned after a four-year silence with their third LP, the appropriately titled iii. Progressing naturally from their previous releases, iii is a collection of soul-infused pop-fusion nuggets. Hook maestros Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg – also known as Bloodshy & Avant, writers of Britney's Grammy-winning "Toxic" – and Andrew Wyatt built reputations with their knack for inventive songcraft, which is well executed here on their own material. Opening with a theatrical piano and drum flourish – and closing with the sweeping coda "Longshot (7 Nights)" – iii is a confident and catchy third act for the Swedish-American trio.

Hailing from Glasgow, Big Hogg are a six-piece whose eponymous debut displays a truly eclectic attitude. With no need for 15-minute epics, the band’s music combines folk, jazz, chamber music, psychedelic and Canterbury influences (the album’s closing song is dedicated to Robert Wyatt) in an exciting blend that never sounds derivative. A special mention is also deserved by Julia Jeffery’s striking, Gothic-themed artwork.

While Tish Hinojosa only recorded briefly for the Watermelon label at the beginning of her career, Taos to Tennessee, Aquella Noche, and Memorabilia Navidena represented a distinct body of work from a new singer/songwriter. While Hinojosa grew up in Texas, she kept close ties to her Mexican heritage, often choosing to sing in Spanish. This bilingual, bicultural approach also lent her songwriting a unique subject matter. Add to this her lovely, warm voice and pleasant country-folk arrangements, and there's much to admire on her early albums.

Originally released on ECM in 1971, and here reissued on CD in Japan, this historic date features the two British bassists engaged while at the top of their powers, exploring not only tonality and the dynamic and harmonic possibilities that exist between two double basses, but also the expanded notions of how the different players' styles and musical intuitions dovetail, rather than work in opposition. Holland's pizzicato attack is far more languid and lush than Phillips,' whose style is over the top; they approach each encounter as one in which sheer propulsiveness becomes an aesthetic.

Progressive rock bands stumbled into the '80s, some with the crutch of commercial concessions under one arm, which makes the Moody Blues' elegant entrance via Long Distance Voyager all the more impressive…

Musicians like to observe that for all his notoriety as the wellspring of bebop, Charlie "Bird" Parker's music was loaded with the blues. SWEDISH SCHNAPPS is as good a place as any to make that connection with Parker's music, including as it does two of his most enduring bop heads based on the blues, "Au Privave" and "Blues For Alice." While you wouldn't mistake either composition for a Muddy Waters tune, both relate Bird's off-kilter accents and serpentine melodicism at walking tempos that let you hear what's actually going by, instead of leaving you astonished but bemused. To really drive the point home, there's "K.C. Blues," which finds the altoist at his hollerin' best, and "Lover Man," certainly one of the bluesiest 32-bar standards around.
