Michael Mantler offers a review of his career (so far), in an anthology that follows his path from the creative heyday of the Jazz Composer's Orchestra through the body of work he has recorded for JCOA, WATT and ECM. Whether juxtaposing players from the worlds of jazz, classical music and rock, setting remarkable words for remarkable voices, composing for instrumental forces from duo to symphony orchestra, or soloing as trumpeter, Mantler sounds like no one else. If the range of his work is its hallmark, his tone, as player and writer, is unmistakably his own.

Michael Mantler’s Cerco Un Paese Innocente (I search for an innocent land) pays tribute to the father of modern Italian poetry, Giuseppe Ungaretti. Subtitled “A Suite of Songs and Interludes for Voice, Untypical Big Band and Soloists,” this seamless construction feels anything but untypical in the comforting plush of its instrumentation and attention to soundscape. The present recording is also significant for bringing Copenhagen-born vocalist Mona Larsen back together with the Danish Radio Big Band, who debuted her as soloist in the seventies to wide renown.

A friend of mine once likened a particularly metronomic performance of Beethoven’s Appassionata to a man being pursued by hornets. I don’t know who’s pursuing Fazil Say in the first movement, but the pianist either sounds as if he’s fleeing the very same hornets or, most probably, an irate music critic. Say tears through the movement without modifying his fleet basic tempo, yet he somehow conveys the drama and disquiet implied by Beethoven’s frequent dynamic changes, abetted by added bass-note octaves (measures 130-33). However, the Andante con moto is not so much about a unified set of variations as it is about Fazil Say the interpretive graffiti artist.

Bob Mintzer and Michael Brecker appear together and individually on this date for Novus from the early '90s, joined by a fine rhythm section consisting of pianist Don Grolnick, bassist Michael Formanek, and drummer Peter Erskine. Mintzer is the dominant voice on the CD, playing without Brecker on six of the nine tracks and contributing five originals. His moving ballad "Tenorman's Lament" is a warm tribute to Wayne Shorter, while the driving blues "The Saxophone" is bursting with energy.
