After her unforgettable rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on "American Idol" in 2006, Katharine McPhee catapulted to instant stardom. Further propelling her success was the hit single “Over It” from her 2007 chart-topping debut album. McPhee’s talents also extended to acting, which she put to good use in two popular television series, "Smash" and "Scorpion," and she is no stranger to PBS specials, having guested on "Foster and Friends" and "Chris Botti in Boston." In this jazz-filled installment of "Soundstage," McPhee gets the spotlight to herself (with a little help from her friends David Foster, Eric Benet, and Frederic Yonnet) performing selections from her fifth studio album, "I Fall In Love Too Easily." Audiences across America will fall in love very easily with this "Soundstage" performance.

Versatility has gotten vocalist Dianne Reeves in trouble. Those who feel she could be a great jazz singer want her to stick to scat singing and interpreting show tunes; others who enjoyed the light fusion and urban contemporary hits prefer that she look toward the future. Reeves does a little of both on her this set. Art And Survival includes her most hard-hitting message songs to date. The only problem is that Reeves' voice doesn't lend itself to shouts or expressing defiance; she sounds strained on "Endangered Species" and seems more like she's presenting a diatribe than expounding on a theme. Overall, Art And Survival is neither '90s revisited bop nor overtly commercial Quiet Storm fodder. Dianne Reeves is really seeking a middle ground between her two audiences, and if everything here doesn't work, at least she keeps forging ahead.

When she wants to sing jazz, Dianne Reeves has always had the ability to reach the top of her field, but she has long seemed unable to make up her mind between jazz, R&B, world music, and pop. This Blue Note disc fortunately finds her mostly sticking to jazz and in consistently superb form. Reeves' treatments of such numbers as "Afro Blue" (which is particularly memorable), "Love for Sale," "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise," "How High the Moon," and McCoy Tyner's "You Taught My Heart to Sing" all border on the classic.

    FLAC tracks | 01:14:26 | 342 Mb
    Genre: Classical / Label: Etcetera

This CD combines two famous masterpieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in startling and clever arrangements for string quartet and string sextet, both dating from the early 19th century.
The Requiem in D minor KV 626 was conceived by Mozart for four vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra. He began composing it in 1791. When he died in December of that year, the Requiem remained unfinished. It was completed
and edited by Franz Xaver Süssmayr. This version was first published in 1800. Probably only a few years later- some sources suggest as early as 1802- the physician/composer/music publicist Peter Lichtenthal (1780-1853) used this score when he arranged the Requiem for string quartet. His daring arrangement, omitting the vocal soloists and chorus and thus also the words of the Mass for the Death, remained manuscript and was only published at the end of the 20th century.

Although vibraphonist Gary Burton gets top billing, this CD is actually a showcase for vocalist Rebecca Paris. The material is dominated by newer "contemporary" songs and pop tunes; every song except the closing voice-vibes duet is given a routine funk rhythm.

The two sets of dances are charming products of Schubert's mid-teenage years and provide Gidon Kremer with much food for musical thought. Whereas a lesser artist might settle for charm and no more, Kremer locates those occasional corners where bodeful intimations lie dormant: witness the darkening cadences at the close of the Sixth German Dance or the third (D minor) Minuet's pensive outer sections. His solo playing has a fine-spun, slightly husky quality, spot-on the centre of the note and with constantly shifting nuances.

Do you know what the common characteristic to all of the following: racing, sky diving and sky jumping? Yes? No? I will tell you, it’s all about speed and yes we are talking about Speed (fucking) Metal, the Thrash kind of real Speed that bands like VENOM and even DRAGONFORCE and I will not get into the debate regarding the difference between Thrash, Speed and Power Metal. SPEEDTRAP are what I would like to call old school Speed Metal, fast, furious, no holds bar, hand molting and head banging…

Shirley Horn continues in a formula that has become very popular for her. De-emphasizing her piano, Horn sings one very slow ballad after another. The intimate music, which features her trio members, percussionist Alex Acuna and most prominently the keyboards and orchestrations of George Mesterhazy, has very little variety and should be listened to in small doses.

Volume one in a series of albums covering Bartok’s major works for orchestra.
Conductor Thomas Dausgaard writes “To celebrate the great scope and stylistic variety in Bartok’s works, this new series of his orchestral works aims at bringing together on each disc two or more stylistically contrasting works. Whether inspired by impressionistic or late romantic music, by Gypsy music as heard on the streets of Budapest, peasant music from Hungary and Eastern Europe, Arabian music around the Mediterranean, or is a synthesis of many influences towards the end of his life, Bartok’s music speaks to us with an irresistible vitality, passion, humour and compelling seriousness. No more so than in this album’s youthfully exuberant Suite no 1 (here in its uncut original version (1st time on record) and his last completed orchestral work, concerto for orchestra (in this performance incorporating his final changes), where remarkably he returns to the five movement structure of the 1st Suite.”

Unlike the previous volumes in Jon Savage's series of double CD compilations, which featured music from an expansive mixture of genres, this latest edition is 100% rock, as Jon elaborates in the customary bumper 28-page booklet: In the late 60s, British pop and youth culture began to fragment into tribes. The divisions had always been there, even at the height of the supposedly classless mid-60s. I was an unrepentant rock fan. That was my tribe. I still bought Motown and reggae hits, but they were the hits: there was no deeper exploration. After Radio Caroline had gone, I d lost most of the connection to black American music as part of the wider pop experience that I d had in 1965, 1966 and 1967, even 1968.

Reimer and Larson are known for telling stories, whether it's with music or word, and this album is no exception.
Combining their love of movie trailer music (which is known for being bombastic, epic, and a means to tell a story quickly), and Christmas music, Reed and Ben thought this would be a very fun and challenging project, and set to work immediately. There are fifteen tracks on this album, and each represents a different genre like Sci-fi, adventure, or horror.
The highlight for Reed and Ben was collaborating with singer/songwriter Savannah Smith for the two songs on the album, All I Want for Christmas, and O Holy Night. Savanna brought her unique voice to the project to help take the songs to the next level. We are excited about sharing this with everyone, and can't wait to know what you think.
