Upon erupting into a house single fit for any Vegas club, Courage’s opener, “Flying on My Own,” finds Céline Dion alone. “The warmer winds will carry me,” she sings at high altitude, her voice climbing. “Anywhere I want them to/If you could see what I can see/That nothing’s blocking my view.” Courage is the Canadian star’s first album (in any language) since the 2016 death of her husband and longtime manager, René Angélil. Recorded almost entirely in Las Vegas—near the end of the wildly successful eight-year residency there that she and Angélil had conceived of together—these are songs of resilience, of moving forward when all you want is to look back. To get there, she collaborated with some of modern pop’s biggest names (Sia, Sam Smith, Skylar Grey, Greg Kurstin, David Guetta) for everything from heartbreaking ballads (“Courage”) to brief flirtations with rapping (the piano-driven lullaby “Perfect Goodbye,” which features contributions from Steve Aoki). “I’m having some kind of breakthrough,” she sings on “Lying Down,” a tale of faltering love. “I’m ready to live.”

On 8 November, The Police will be reissuing re-mastered 180g heavyweight vinyl of Reggatta de Blanc, Zenyatta Mondatta, Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity as well as a 6-CD boxset edition of 2018’s Every Move You Make: The Studio Recordings that brings together all their studio albums with the addition of a bonus disc of B-sides entitled ‘Flexible Strategies’.

OYC's first album of new material for ten years is out now. Titled "Sleepwalker", it was recorded live across Europe. The music forms the soundtrack to the film of the same name by Andrew Hulme. The music and images were conceived together and the resulting album is compiled from 24 performances spanning nine countries over two years. O Yuki Conjugate (OYC) are an English post-industrial/ambient musical group founded in 1982 in Nottingham by Roger Horberry and Andrew Hulme and still - intermittently - active today. Their music has been variously described as 'ambient', 'fourth world', 'ethnic', 'tribal' and 'dark wave'; the band prefer to call it 'dirty ambient'. They are currently in their fourth incarnation based around Horberry and Hulme. Previous members include Clare Elliot, Tim Horberry, Malcolm McGeorge, Dan Mudford, Pete Woodhead and Rob Jenkins, with Joe Gardiner contributing sax.

This is a most unusual LP due to the inclusion of Cecil Taylor on piano. Although Taylor and John Coltrane got along well, trumpeter Kenny Dorham (who is also on this quintet date) hated the avant-garde pianist's playing and was clearly bothered by Taylor's dissonant comping behind his solos. With bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Louis Hayes doing their best to ignore the discord, the group manages to perform two blues and two standards with Dorham playing strictly bop, Taylor coming up with fairly free abstractions, and Coltrane sounding somewhere in between. The results are unintentionally fascinating.

Buddhists believe that the daily practice of meditation will make them more calm, controlled and self-aware. But if meditation is a journey that leads to peace, its value lies as much in that journey as the destination. This four-disc set, with helpful notes on how to use and benefit from these beautiful recordings, is the soundtrack to that journey and an ideal starting point.

Unapologetically rooted in the British Blues-Rock boom of the late 60's and 70s, steeped in the tradition of Leslie West's Mountain, The Jeff Beck Group and early Led Zeppelin, Blues Karloff explore the outer reaches of the sounds that shaped this musical era. On their debut album Ready For Judgement Day, which was released in October 2014, the band saluted some of the Blues legends that every member of Blues Karloff had been listening to since childhood. The album featured songs by Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Howlin' Wolf, and Muddy Waters; vintage Blues gems revisited, like the British Blues-Rock greats such The Yardbirds, The Pretty Things, Savoy Brown, John Mayall and his Bluesbreakers and Fleetwood Mac did back in the sixties and seventies; blistering interpretations of classic Blues anthems reinterpreted in their own distinctive fashion, introducing a contemporary flavour to the genre.

Melvin Gibbs has not been an easy artist to pigeonhole. The New York City bassist has had plenty of rock credentials (including Harriet Tubman, Eye & I, and the Rollins Band), but he has had his share of impressive jazz associations as well (for example, Sonny Sharrock, Bill Frisell, and Ronald Shannon Jackson). And Gibbs doesn't become any easier to pigeonhole on Ancients Speak, which finds him leading a group that is billed as Melvin Gibbs' Elevated Entity. This 2009 release draws on a long list of influences, ranging from African pop to funk, hip-hop, jazz, and rock.

Once we are aware that certain music has been written for film, it’s easy to wax poetic about said music’s visual associations. Yet I believe that one needn’t be aware of Greek composer Eleni Karaindrou’s filmic motivations in order to feel it in the same way, for hers imagines, recites, and sings the lament of a zeitgeist in decay. Karaindrou’s themes are potent yet familiar, even (if not especially) to those who’ve never heard them before. Brimming with tragedy and triumph alike, this is music not only for the fictional, but also for real strangers crossing paths in a world of mist and shadows.

"Sissoko squared! Two Sissokos? No need to try arithmetic, mental calculations, addition or multiplication: the Sissokos form a whole, one piece, a sum of knowledge, practice, tradition, innovation, creativity rooted in a dynastic heritage. It is a line of griots from Mali who led to the meeting of these two cousins. Cousins in family, cousins in music, cousins in the desire to take their instruments to the borders of the musical encounters. Encounters which were numerous for both until today when the idea of being face to face finally prevailed over the many other projects. This album is an opportunity to relive instruments and dialogues as in their youth, in the early 80s when they were members of the National Instrumental Ensemble of Mali, each taking over the place of his own father. Now, they play again together, in the most natural way, a brotherly encounter, fostering a music of peace that lets the warm winds of West Africa blow to the rest of the world.
