Released to mark the ninetieth anniversary of the composer’s birth, this programme of Kenneth Leighton’s choral music reflects his outstanding accomplishments in the genre across his entire composing career: it includes Leighton’s earliest and last pieces for unaccompanied choir, three Christmas carols, two extended masterpieces, and two works composed for the Choir of St Mary’s Cathedral itself. Extensively praised under its current director of music Duncan Ferguson, the choir has both a historical affinity for this body of work and a sophisticated musicianship which hereproduces performances of focused maturity and depth.

In their first Atlantic session “Stick and his Buddies”, comprising of brother Brownie ,Wilbert “Big Chief” Ellis ,Gene Ramsey and an unknown drummer (possibly Gene Moore) cut six tracks (Tall Pretty Woman Blues was released) on Valentine’s day 1949. The band was in quite good form, having practised Drinking Wine over and Over again and Granville’s writing style and performances were versatile. He could move effortlessly from proto rock and roll to somewhat unpolished crooning jazz styling and of course he was a fine blues performer…

GRAMMY Award-winning keyboardist/composer/producer Jeff Lorber recalls seeing guitarist Mike Stern during his much-ballyhooed tenure with Miles Davis in the early ‘80s. “I’ve been a fan of his for a long time,” said the keyboardist, who was touring hard in support of his hit records Wizard Island and It’s a Fact in those analog days. “Jeff Lorber Fusion and Miles Davis were playing some of the same festivals back then, so I got to hear him play.” For his part, Stern offered, “To be honest, I was aware of him, and had heard a bunch of good things, but I had never really checked him out. We were just in different orbits, me and Jeff.”

Bruckner's music embodies the visions of a devout, ordinary man. Parts of his expansive, shimmering musical landscapes are influenced by Wagner, but one can also detect Schubert, who began life in similar circumstances. The reposeful piety which runs through Bruckner's symphonic spectrum lends his music its unique power of attraction.

The title of this CD is accurate, as this live date – recorded at Washington D.C.'s Adam's Rib on April 27, 1984 (but not released for the first time until 21 years later) – is full of explosive fire. The legendary Danny Gatton and Tom Principato had complementary guitar styles, open to jazz, electric blues, and country. With stimulating backup from keyboardist Mike Sucher (who often achieves the sound of an organ), bassist John Previti, and drummer Robbie Magruder, the two guitarists dig into blues, passionate pop/rock, and even "Harlem Nocturne" (a feature for Gatton), all of it having the spirit of adventurous jazz. While Principato has four vocals along the way, the emphasis is very much on the guitarists, who are at their best when they are interacting with each other. This is consistently exciting music.
