Barry is blues royalty; a true legend among blues drummers and connoisseurs. Thus, his name "the Baron of the Blues," as musicians often introduce him, is a perfect fit with his real name, Baron. Barry's playing personifies the quintessential blues-based drummer: a deep pocket, tight groove and supportive agility. Barry spent years touring with Shemekia Copeland on a myriad of domestic and international tours. Before that, he toured for years with her father, the legendary Johnny Copeland.

In 2015, Big Apple Blues released the album ENERGY, which described day in a life of New York City. Boasting entirely original material, ENERGY marked a departure from the well-trodden blues genre towards a fusion of instrumental blues, soul, funk, and rock. Unable to assign the album to a pre-defined genre, the critics labeled it as the “Big Apple Blues Sound.” MANHATTAN ALLEY builds on ENERGY and presents more of the feel-good Big Apple Blues Sound. Like its predecessor, MANHATTAN ALLEY tells its own story, aiming to draw from a well of energy and philosophical, utterly positive reflections on life and creativity. It is inspired by New York City itself - NYC with a nod to Tin Pan Alley - the collection of New York City music publishers and songwriters that dominated popular music in America in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Best known for their 1965 smash "Wooly Bully," which helped introduce Tex-Mex rhythms to mainstream rock & roll, Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs were formed in Dallas by lead singer Domingo Samudio, who took the name Sam the Sham from a joke about his inability as a vocalist. The Pharaohs consisted of guitarist Ray Stinnet, bassist David Martin, saxophonist Butch Gibson, and drummer Jerry Patterson…

Outside Germany, the name Weimar tends to evoke mixed feelings and pictures of German history of the last hundred years. Within Germany, Weimar means a town in the state of Thuringia arguably saturated with the “Deutsche Kultur” of the “Weimarer Klassik”, the legendary Bauhaus, and finally the life and work of Franz Liszt and his son in law Richard Wagner. In Weimar Richard Wagner began composing the first part of his RING-cycle, “Das Rheingold”. In 2008 the Nationaltheater Weimar started a new production of this unique tetralogy. The conductor is Carl St.Clair, a former student of Leonard Bernstein. With Michael Schulz’ fine and highly intelligent staging this new “Ring” production becomes an outstanding document of contemporary opera theatre.

Dutch pianist Mengelberg is in full reverie with this trio. He is teamed with Americans Brad Jones (bass) and Joey Baron (drums), who pretty much act as Mengelberg's supporting cast, never getting too rhythmically flashy. The pianist's sound is a witty combination of modern harmonic invention and melodic improvisational forays into Cecil Taylor territory. Many tuneful compositions crop up during the 11 tracks, all Mengelberg originals. The title cut sounds like a newborn standard, a nice swinger that leads to a bridge with frantic Taylor-like flourishes. Mengelberg's main influence, Herbie Nichols, comes shining through during another nice swinger, "Gare Guillemans," which features soulful touches and advanced harmonic nuances…

In an age when even big-name soloists are trying their hands at historical-performance techniques, it's worthwhile to splash water on one's face from time to time and revisit the era when Bach's music served many performers simply as a stimulus to further creative activity. The piano transcriptions of Bach's music on this two-disc set are by Walter Rummel, a British-American pianist and composer of the interwar era whose mother was the daughter of Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph.
