This legendary Bayreuth Festival production of Wagner’s 'Der Ring des Nibelungen', directed by Harry Kupfer, with designs by Hans Schavernoch, and conducted by Daniel Barenboim, is considered perhaps the finest video recording of these four operas ever made. For their innovative modernist staging, Kupfer and his team turned away from the work’s time of origin and located The Ring at a “road of history”, a meeting-place of past, present and future, which sets the scene for the story’s struggles of power and love. Barenboim’s authoritative yet highly responsive reading of the immense score and the extraordinary performances of the cast help to make this a truly memorable Ring.

On February 8th, 2013, Bruce Springsteen was honored as the 2013 MusiCares Person Of The Year. MusiCares was established in 1989 by the Recording Academy to provide a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need, through innovative programs and services. A highlight of Grammy week activities, this recording brings together a stellar list of other artists paying tribute to Bruce and his music performing many of the songs he wrote throughout his illustrious career, as well as Bruce himself and the E Street Band performing new songs and a few favorites.

BACK BEFORE BACH, the latest Navona Records release from the Philadelphia-based ‘Renaissance band’ Piffaro, is an exceptional compendium of sixteenth and early seventeenth century German and Franco-Flemish music. As the album’s title suggests, the group of composers Piffaro features can be seen as the precedent for the luminaries of the German baroque era, specifically Johann Sebastian Bach. With BACK BEFORE BACH simultaneously drawing from a wide variety of genres, yet also focusing on a geographically and temporally limited group of composers, Piffaro succeeds wildly in presenting the musical foundation from which Bach and his contemporaries emerged.

On a strong follow-up to his classic Twilight Time, tenor-saxophonist Bennie Wallace continues in the same New Orleans r&bish vein. The music includes funky originals and a few traditional numbers ("Stormy Weather" and "Carolina Moon") and features Wallace with trombonist Ray Anderson (on four of the eight tunes), pianist Dr. John, guitarist John Scofield, bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Herlin Riley; guests include guitarist Mitch Watkins on two numbers. Although not quite reaching the heights of the earlier set, there is plenty of spirit displayed on this unusual and easily recommended set.
