Mercy, Pity, Peace & Love is a concept album deriving its inspiration as much from William Blake's visionary aesthetics (the title is taken from the poet's Songs of Innocence and Experience) as from 20th century musical icons ranging from Jimi Hendrix, King Crimson and Tortoise to Igor Stravinsky and Olivier Messiaen. Rather than a linear sequence describing one musical event, this record is a multilayered sonic adventure that has a lot of stuff going on. Pianist Mal Waldron's music is characterized by a heavily-brooding rhythmic quality, with the left hand usually carrying the theme at one repetitious tempo while the right hammers away in juxtaposition with a counter tempo (usually faster). Such was the case with "Up Popped the Devil," "Snake Out" and "Changachangachang," three very Waldronian pieces in both structure and execution, the latter deriving its melody from the whole-tone scale. Aside from Waldron, the record's strongest points were bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Billy Higgins, their work being sensitive and supportive throughout.

The Jazz Club series is an attractive addition to the Verve catalogue. With it's modern design and popular choice of repertoire, the Jazz Club is not only opened for Jazz fans, but for everyone that loves good music.

Eilen Jewell's music lives in a middle ground between vintage country and the blues, and her plain-spoken but artful songs serve as an apt reminder that there's more the two styles share than there is that keeps them apart. Jewell's sixth album, 2011's Queen of the Minor Key, is her first release since her tribute to the songs of Loretta Lynn, Butcher Holler, and while Jewell wrote all 14 songs on this set, one might guess she was thinking Patsy Cline during these sessions after previously contemplating Cline's friend Loretta.

German project T is the creative vehicle of composer and musician Thomas Thielen, formerly of the German band Scythe, but now with a solo career that has been ongoing ever since he released his first album using the 'T' moniker in 2002. Thomas plays all the instruments, does the vocals, lyrics, engineering, producing and recording. "Fragmentropy" is his fifth full-length production, released in 2015 by Progressive Promotion Records. "Fragmentropy" comes across as a fairly eclectic and demanding production, arguably with a foundation inside modern day neo-progressive rock and post-rock, but made with an approach that makes it hard to categorize inside any of those stylistic contexts easily…

This disc received the 2000 Gramophone magazine award for "Best Concerto Recording." It also received a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Classical Album" and "Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance (with Orchestra)." Franz Joseph Haydn made numerous contributions to the world of music. However, for a composer of his stature, he did not delve much into the realm of piano concertos. Of the 14 attributed to him, eight are probably the work of other composers. The three Haydn piano concertos on this album are all the more delightful for their rarity and beauty.

Recorded "In Glorious Mono" on analog tape with no overdubs, the album marks a shift in Hunter's sound from the genre-mixing of his previous three releases to a consistent blues/R&B-influenced approach. The title is allegedly a real quotation; according to Hunter, "Well, it's a quote from a real, older, curmudgeonly musician that people have worked for. And I cannot name names, but it really did happen. It really does happen; let me put it that way."
