Of the three albums that make up Gothenburg's holy trinity, Dark Tranquillity's The Gallery was the least immediate, with unorthodox song structures that took time to assimilate, while At the Gates' Slaughter of the Soul didn't truly cement its classic status until a new generation of American metalcore bands started to copy it riff for riff. In Flames' The Jester Race, however, pretty much announced itself as a masterwork right from day one. More than any other, this is the album that put the "melodic" in melodic death metal. Traditionalists who'd never been able to stomach death metal's brutality were stunned to hear winding, intricate twin-guitar lines lifted from Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and countless European power metal records…

For once, here’s a band for which the word 'supergroup' is completely apposite. Swiss vocalist Andreas Schaerer, German pianist Michael Wollny, French accordionist Vincent Peirani and his saxophonist compatriot Emile Parisien are four of the brightest and most charismatic stars in European jazz, and they have now formed themselves into a quartet. Between them, they have so far garnered no fewer than twelve German ECHO Jazz awards, as well as just about every distinction of importance in their own countries. They are in their mid- to late thirties, and their new live recording “Out of Land” demonstrates why they are at the very pinnacle of jazz musicians of their generation. It is because they are re-defining the possibilities of their instruments; not just cutting loose from the boundaries of jazz, but doing it in a way which energizes and inspires audiences of all generations.

Any new album by Vladimir Ashkenazy is cause for celebration and attracts worldwide attention. First as a pianist and latterly as a conductor in a performing career of over six decades, Ashkenazy was recognized early on as having all the virtues of a great performer: musicianship, intellectual perception, technical perfection and musical instincts that never failed to make his fingers say something. He has an individual but expressive conducting technique, but he made the transition to the podium with complete success during the late 70s and early 80s, and his orchestral recordings are now as numerous as his piano albums, and the best of them as masterly.

Sung by Janis Joplin (All is loneliness) and hailed by Philip Glass and Steve Reich as a pioneer of minimalism, Moondog merges the medieval canon (Music for little hands), like Satie , fugue and passacaille according to Bach, and the asymmetrical rhythms of popular dance: Santa Fe, Elfe Dance, Sea Horse, Rue Lette and Für Fritz. Among the young generation who more or less (!) Appropriates their music, pianist François Mardirossian is an exception. Sensitive to the different facets of this character resolutely timeless - until his own transcription of the famous Bird’s Lament (taken as the credits of several TV and radio shows), he preserves its medieval hieratism and jazzy ardor!

Recorded with producer Jay Joyce in Nashville, Tennessee, You Deserve Love marks White Reaper’s Elektra Records debut and follows their celebrated 2017 album, The World’s Best American Band. The album is a collection of smart, sharply-written songs of doubt, dislocation, and elusive and often complicated love. Earlier this summer White Reaper shared You Deserve Love’s lead singles “Real Long Time” and “Might Be Right,” the latter of which has quickly ascended into the Top 30 on Billboard’s ‘Alternative Songs’ chart.

Tosca was revived to great acclaim at La Scala in this 2000 production, which built on Luca Ronconi's 1996 version with musical direction from principal conductor Riccardo Muti and Lorenza Cantini's nightmarishly distorted set. Puccini's most recorded opera is loved and derided in equal measure for its high-octane dramatics, rich arias and the fire-spitting exchanges of the eponymous heroine and her wily tormentor Scarpia. Under Muti, the music takes precedence over the self-conscious theatricality of the book. As a result, some high dramatic points–the stabbing, always tricky, and Tosca's suicide, equally dicey–are underplayed here.

Los Angeles-based English composer John Powell crafts scores for major motion pictures, with a focus on animated films and sci-fi/action movies. Following his first major score for Face/Off, he went on to compose for the Jason Bourne and the Ice Age series. In addition to multiple Saturn, BAFTA, and Annie Award nominations, Powell also received a Grammy nomination in 2008 for his score for the animated penguin flick Happy Feet, and an Oscar nomination in 2011 for his score for How to Train Your Dragon.

"John Robilette begins his unusual, somewhat old-fashioned programme with two Bach transcriptions by Kempff (with a reminder in his informative booklet notes that Bach transcribed his and other composers' music long before 'transcriptions' became a dirty word). Instantly noticeable from Robilette's playing of Kempff's transcription of Bach's Siciliano is the sheer beauty and quality of tone he produces from his instrument.

Such is the high praise that has been lauded by musicians and music historians on Johann Sebastian Bach's two-volume work in the nigh 300 years since it was written. Each volume of the cycle contains 24 preludes and fugues, in all of the major and minor keys, each pair progressing upwards by one semitone - a unique undertaking for it's time. Although the Wohltemperiertes Klavier is still today the daily bread of student pianists of the highest calibre, alongside it's pedagogical role, it's greatest importance lies in the encyclopaedic richness of it's musical contents, the variety of types of movement, textures and characters, the formal rigour and freedom, and the juxtaposition of archaic and the most modern of styles from Bach's time. Both volumes contain prelude-and-fugue pairs of which were conceivably written at different times. Borbala Dobozy began higher education harpsichord studies with Zuzana Ruzickova at the Academy of Music in Bratislava and then continued with her at the Prague Academy of Music.

David Murray, doubling on tenor and bass clarinet, interacts with drummer Jack Dejohnette and (on two of the seven selections) bassist Fred Hopkins for a set of originals by Murray, DeJohnette and Butch Morris. The duo/trio explore a variety of moods with Murray's extroverted and advanced solos generally serving as the lead voice. Although an avant-garde set, this Japanese import has its mellow and melodic moments before the fire takes over again.
