Inoyama Land (Inoyamaland) was a duo of Yasushi Yamashita and Makoto Inoue, both past members of avant-pop ensemble Hikashu. It appears they only issued a couple of albums, as well as a posthumous compilation of live and previously unreleased material. A progressive sound approach with synths, mellotrons, tabla and sitars.

Neither guitarist John Abercrombie nor producer Manfred Eicher's ECM label are often thought of in connection with dissonant, almost aggressive music, which makes the powerful OPEN LAND that much more of a surprise. Moving away from the guitar/synthesizer experiments Abercrombie favored in the early '90s towards a more traditional electric guitar tone, his playing here is at times fierce and never less than dazzling. With nine tracks in just under 65 minutes, the song structures of OPEN LAND are a bit more compact than Abercrombie usually favors; his solos are consequently more streamlined and intense.

Recorded live at the Dalton Center Recital Hall at Western Michigan University. The stellar band for the occasion was comprised of pianist Ellis Marsalis, bassist Reginald Veal, and drummer Ralph Peterson. From the thrilling opening crawl through 'Tin Roof Blues' to a strutting 'Sesame Street Theme' with some plunger mute magic all the way to the appropriately nostalgic 'Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans' closer, this recording gives the listener a glimpse of the captivating, real and true soul and spirit of Delfeayo Marsalis.

In contrast to the many soul veterans who have turned to urban contemporary sounds in the hope of staying on the staying on the charts, Tower of Power has stuck with the type of horn-driven, live-sounding funk and soul that put the Bay Area band on the map. Tower was long past its prime by the time Monster on a Leash was released in 1991, and had experienced its share of personnel changes. Lead singer Tom Bowes, although a passionate and competent belter, is hardly on a par with Lenny Williams. Even so, this is a respectable and decent effort from a band that remained artistically viable by staying true to itself.

This two-fer from Collectables features a pair of out of print Herbie Mann LPs: Windows Opened and The Inspiration I Feel, both originally issued on Atlantic Records in 1968. These 12 tracks feature jazz versions of popular songs of the period written by Donovan, Tim Hardin, and Jimmy Webb plus six associated with Ray Charles. Herbie Mann is accompanied by frequent collaborators Roy Ayers, Sonny Sharrock and Miroslav Vitous (and Bruno Carr), whose names should attract, justifiably, "serious" Jazz lovers.
