David Gilmour is the debut solo studio album by Pink Floyd guitarist and co-lead vocalist David Gilmour, released on 26 May 1978. The album reached number 17 in the UK and number 29 on the Billboard US album charts; it was certified Gold in the US. The album was produced by Gilmour, and consists mostly of blues and guitar-oriented rock songs, except for the piano-dominated ballad "So Far Away". In an interview with Circus in 1978, Gilmour said: "This album was important to me in terms of self-respect. At first I didn't think my name was big enough to carry it. Being in a group for so long can be a bit claustrophobic, and I needed to step out from behind Pink Floyd's shadow."

    Genre: Jazz, Hard Bop, Post-Bop

Originally recorded in February 1965 at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs studio and reissued on CD in 1990 by Impulse! Records, Dear John C. is a masterwork in drum titan Elvin Jones' leader discography. Recorded while Jones was serving as the engine room of the John Coltrane Quartet, the album's title track pays direct homage to Coltrane (written by Bob Hammer and producer Bob Thiele). The session features alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano and bassist Richard Davis across all tracks, split between two superb pianists: Roland Hanna on tracks 1–3 and Elvin's older brother, Hank Jones, on tracks 7–10, with tracks 4–6 operating as a lean, fiery sax-bass-drums trio. From Charlie Parker's bebop vehicle "Anthropology" and Charles Mingus' "Love Bird" to standard ballads like "Feeling Good" and Bob Hammer's rhythmic odd-meter piece "That Five-Four Bag," Jones delivers a masterclass in dynamic, polyrhythmic drumming.
