Biography: Chicago guitarist Jimmy Dawkins would just as soon leave his longtime nickname "Fast Fingers" behind. It was always something of a stylistic misnomer anyway; Dawkins's West Side-styled guitar slashes and surges, but seldom burns with incendiary speed. Dawkins's blues are generally of the brooding, introspective variety – he doesn't engage in flashy pyrotechnics or outrageous showmanship. It took a long time for Dawkins to progress from West Side fixture to nationally known recording artist. He rode a Greyhound bus out of Mississippi in 1955, dressed warm to ward off the Windy City's infamous chill factor. Only trouble was, he arrived on a sweltering July day! Harpist Billy Boy Arnold offered the newcomer encouragement, and he eventually carved out a niche on the competitive West Side scene (his peers included Magic Sam and Luther Allison). Sam introduced Dawkins to Delmark Records boss Bob Koester. Fast Fingers, Dawkins's 1969 debut LP for Delmark–still his best album to date–was a taut, uncompromising piece of work that won the Grand Prix du Disque de Jazz from the Hot Club of France in 1971 as the year's top album. Andrew "Big Voice" Odom shared the singing and Otis Rush the second guitar duties on Dawkins's 1971 encore All for Business. But after his Delmark LP Blisterstring, Dawkins's subsequent recordings lacked intensity until 1991's oddly titled Kant Sheck Dees Bluze for Chicago's Earwig Records. After that, Dawkins waxed discs for Ichiban and Fedora, and continued to tour extensively. ~ Bill Dahl, All Music Guide

Jimmy Dawkins: 5 Albums

Lossless: 320 Mb | Mp3 (Fraunhofer IIS - 320 kbps): 122 Mb | Audio CD (June 16, 1998) | Original Release Date: 1969 | Number of Discs: 1 - Label: Delmark Records | Catalog Number: DD-623

Product Description: First released in 1969, after guitarist Jimmy Dawkins had served a long apprenticeship as a sideman in the Chicago electric blues scene, Fast Fingers remains one of the finest pure electric blues albums of its era. Dawkins proves to be a solid songwriter and an able singer, although the best moments on the album invariably come when he tears off a casually perfect, deeply soulful, but never showy electric solo. Highlights include the stomping instrumental "Triple Trebles," featuring an outstanding Dawkins solo over a funky horn-driven rhythm, and the mellow, laid-back opener, "It Serves Me Right to Suffer." The album was finally reissued on CD in 1998 with a new cover and two fine outtakes from the original sessions, "Sad and Blues" (which features an exceptional extended solo by Dawkins) and "Back Home Blues," which is a 1969 recording with a new (1998) vocal by Dawkins.

This debut album from 1968-69 has Dawkins' signature stinging guitar backed up by Eddie Shaw, Lafayette Leake, Might Joe Young, Joe Harper & Ernest Gatewood, inc. 1 never before released bonus cut

Review: When Fast Fingers was first released in 1969, Jimmy Dawkins was recognized as a blues guitarist on his way up. He never has received the acclaim he deserves, but this record, his debut album still holds up, and showcases a talent that we are still bless to have with us. Dawkins' style of playing is mournful but frenetic, with lost of fast runs (hence the album name, which became Dawkins' nickname) and times when his playing starts to build up like the music is going to speed up considerably, but he levels off. Songs like It Serves Me Right To Suffer, I'm Good For Nothing, I Finally Learned A Lesson, and I Don't Know What Love Is show off this skillful technique, and make you wonder why Dawkins doesn't occupy a more prominent place in the blues pantheon. Regardless, this CD is excellent, and very enjoyable for anyone who likes the blues and blues guitar.

The Jimmy Dawkins Band - Blisterstring - 1977 (1996)

Jimmy Dawkins: 5 Albums

Lossless: 352 Mb | Mp3 (Fraunhofer IIS - 320 kbps): 143 Mb | Audio CD (September 10, 1996) | Original Release Date: June 1977 | Number of Discs: 1 | Label: Delmark Records | Catalog Number: DE-641

Product Description: Not as impressive as either of his previous outings for Delmark, but still a great deal better than some of what would follow over the course of the next few years. 1975 session that captured the essence of Jimmy's club performances, contains 4 never before released tracks, 60 min. total. Recorded at Chess Studios, Chicago, Illinois. Includes liner notes by Jim Feeney. Recording information: Chess Studios, Chicago, IL.JazzTimes (3/97, p.77) - "…some prime examples of Dawkins' killing, sustaining tone….tons of aggressive guitar work from one of the rawest from Chicago's West Side."

Review: Jimmy Dawkins produced another great blues record with "Blisterstring." And while this record does not have the furious treble playing that "Fast Fingers" has, it is still a great record. His version of "Chitlins Con Carne" and other cuts such as "Welfare Line," "She Got The Blues Too," and "Feel So Bad" are enjoyable, and reminds you of how many great blues artists there are that don't have the fame or recognition that they deserve. Jimmy Dawkins definitely deserves that kind of celebrity, and he shows you why on "Blisterstring."

Jimmy Dawkins - Blues And Pain - 1994

Jimmy Dawkins: 5 Albums

Lossless: 276 Mb | Mp3 (Fraunhofer IIS - 320 kbps): 110 Mb | Audio CD (September 9, 1994) | Number of Discs: 1 | Label: Wild Dog Blues/Ichiban - Catalog Number: DOG 9108-2

Product Description: The winter of 1994 in Chicago was particularly brutal. The kind of freezing, miserable winter that can numb your soul and give you the blues. Blues and pain. The influence of these conditions are behind this new Jimmy Dawkins release. Jimmy stuffed his amp in the trunk of his Cadillac, grabbed his big guitar and his drummer Ray Scott, and drove straight on through from Chicago to Atlanta. The next two days were spent holed up in KALA studios, where Jimmy and the band ripped into the piercing, tormented set of blues contained on this disc. The only luxury was that we had 16 ounce beers instead of the regular kind. Producer Bryan Cole and engineer Edd Miller silently smiled at each other as the tape ran and the shredding guitar lines sprang forth from Jimmy's trademark Gibson. The reigning king of Chicago's west side expelled all the feelings that had built up after extensive international road travel. Blues and Pain is a volcanic eruption of soul, made all the more intense by turning up the volume. Crank it !

Recorded at KALA Studios, Atlanta, GA

Review: It appears that both Dawkins and Ichiban have made the right move. This is pure, perfect and passionate modern Chicago blues with a heavy dose of stinging westside guitar. It's a real treat. ~ WESTCOAST BLUES REVIEW

Jimmy Dawkins - Hot Wire 81 - 1994

Jimmy Dawkins: 5 Albums

Lossless: 219 Mb | Mp3 (Fraunhofer IIS - 320 kbps): 103 Mb | Audio CD (March 24, 1994) | Original Release Date: March 1981 | Number of Discs: 1 | Label: Evidence | Catalog Number: ECD 26043-2

Product Description: We recorded Hotwire '81 after a tour in Europe that was 6 weeks long, pretty much the average tour back then, tho' as I think of it now, it seems like a long time. I was an excited young pup when we did this 'record', my first tour in Europe, I especially loved France and moved to Paris a year later, in 1982, for what would turn out to be one of the best decisions of my life.
This recording date caught us a bit by surprise as I remember, we'd been doing 'one-niters' for what seemed like forever, and then after the very last gig, when we thought we were leaving, we found out that they wanted to do this recording. We did the whole thing in basically one or two takes per tune, on a Sunday afternoon at Davout Studios in Paris. Some of the tunes were written on the spot, others we had lyrics for, but no 'hook', or we had the 'hook', but needed to put the lyrics together. Jimmy stayed up, most of the nite before the recording, re-working the lyrics on the tunes that he had ready. The album garnered the 'Grand Prix du Jazz' award, and the 'Big Bill Broonzy' awards in France that year. ~ J. Schutte

Jimmy Dawkins - American Roots: Blues - 2002

Product Description: This is part of Ichiban Records "American Roots" series. Recorded at Kala Studios, Atlanta, Georgia

Review: Caught some Dawkins by accident and bought this CD because it is somewhat of a compilation of his music. I must say it is the Blues. No Rock here. Pure Blues. Not really a bad cut on the CD, and Me, My Gitar and the Blues as well as Cold as Hell are fantastic. These as slow grinding deep Blues. Jimmy just seems to go for those low tones, and I love them. The only complaint I might have would be in the production of some of the songs. It seems as if on the first three cuts that the producer is ashamed of the guitar (no need to be), the backup band, mostly the drums, just overwhelm Jimmy on the guitar. All in all it is a great sampling of a great Blues man. ~ Amazon Customer
