Sir Andrew Davis is among the most distinguished interpreters of British music today and here turns to the works of Sir Arnold Bax. With the inclusion of the Phantasy for Viola and Orchestra, this album marks the completion of Chandos’s long project to record Bax’s complete orchestral music over time.

Born in 1883 into a wealthy family in London, Arnold Bax began a love affair with Ireland as a young man. He moved there in 1911 and his Four Orchestral Pieces from 1912 – 13 are deeply influenced by the landscape of the countryside near his Dublin home. The first three are better known in revised versions, from 1928, as Three Pieces for Small Orchestra. Here ‘The Dance of Wild Irravel’ joins the other three movements for the premiere recording of the four Pieces as Bax originally conceived and orchestrated them.

The Phantasy for Viola and Orchestra from 1920 was inspired by the strong feelings with which Bax responded to the Irish political turmoil at the time, underlined by his use of the Sinn Fein Marching Song (later the Irish national anthem) at its climax. Bax is celebrated for his melodic invention and this passionately lyrical score must be one of the finest examples of his gift. Here the soloist is Philip Dukes, described by The Times as ‘Great Britain’s most outstanding viola player’.

By 1927 Bax’s style was changing and the opening of the Overture, Elegy and Rondo is reminiscent of a classical concerto, suggesting a leaning towards then-fashionable neoclassicism. The long, dreamy melody of the middle section and brilliant, colourful orchestration, however, are unmistakable hallmarks of Bax’s individual voice.

Composer: Arnold Bax
Performer: Philip Dukes
Conductor: Sir Andrew Davis

Reviews: Lyrita was the first label to introduce most of the symphonies and major tone poems of Bax to American listeners and audiophiles. Then Chandos followed with a comprehensive survey of Bax’s complete orchestral music, including two complete symphony cycles conducted by Bryden Thomson and Vernon Handley. Handley’s cycle has received nearly universal critical raves, but in many ways, I think Thomson gets closer to Bax’s unmistakable personal sound world when compared to Handley’s consistently chilly approach. Thomson’s performances of the Bax tone poems, frequently used as fillers for the symphonies, are irreplaceable.

Now, Chandos concludes its traversal of Bax’s orchestral music with still another remarkable CD. The three works are all quite lengthy (well over 20 minutes), and contain multiple sections that could be construed as movements, but as is often the case with Bax, there is little formal symphonic development. The early Four Orchestral Pieces are rather lightweight nature portraits, and the Phantasy for Viola and Orchestra (initially planned as a viola concerto) reflects Bax’s feelings about the Irish landscape and politics. The later Overture, Elegy, and Rondo, composed in 1927 between the Second and Third symphonies, is less overtly programmatic and Romantic, and more substantial and symphonic in scope and structure. All of these works clearly demonstrate the Bax sound, but in a more gentle and less distinctive way than the symphonies and more dramatic tone poems such as Tintagel, The Garden of Fand, and November Woods. The Overture, Elegy, and Rondo contains phrases that would appear in more fully developed orchestral form in the third movement and epilogue from the Third Symphony.

“The Dance of Wild Irravel”from the Four Orchestral Pieces has been recorded separately by Thomson as a filler for the Third Symphony. It could be regarded as La valse light, with none of the dark undertones. This is to my knowledge the first time that it has been recorded with the three other short orchestral pieces as originally conceived by Bax. The Phantasy for Viola and Orchestra is available on a Dutton collection of works for viola, and the Overture, Elegy, and Rondo was recorded in the early 1990s by Barry Wordsworth and the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra on Marco Polo and later released by Naxos.

In short, this well-conceived Bax collection superbly conducted by Andrew Davis and played by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra totally eclipses the competition, interpretively and sonically. This valuable CD will be required listening for anyone under the spell of Bax’s often magical orchestral sound.
