The Cuban symphonic prog rock band Anima Mundi came to life in the spring of 1996 due to the union of five friends who studied together to major as teachers of music. The band recorded three demos during these years: “Eterno Cauce” (1997), “Tierra Invisible” (1998) and “Más Allá” (1999). Anima Mundi quickly became an essential name among the alternative Cuban scene after offering the first live shows and appearing on specialized radio broadcastings and by means of a nonstop working, they didn’t take long to become the main progressive rock national band for the surprise and delight of many.

Due to the success achieved in national soil, Anima Mundi began planning its first album in 1999. Two guest musicians showed up when the band was composing the songs for the new record. Both of them played the Galician bagpipes, the Celtic flute and the Tin Whistle. This period was characterized by particularities in the band sonority, very different to what they had been doing, and this new shift continued, later on, as a neo prog symphonic rock with Celtic hints found in the album “Septentrión”, 2001.

In July 2002, Mellow Records from Italy released “Septentrión”. During this year, Anima Mundi had the chance of playing all along the island and giving large and important concerts that increased the band audience to thousands of fans.

In August 2002, Anima Mundi began recording its second album “Jagannath Orbit” which turns the band to its initial sound. Hard years approached marked by difficulties in the album production and leaving of some musicians. Those years were characterized by constant changes in the band line up because of the problem in finding skillful musicians who were prepared to face this music genre. Anima Mundi spent all that time looking for a way to make its album productions totally independent, and participated in few concerts and some national rock festivals, supported by guest musicians on the drums and bass.

Anima Mundi: Studio Discography (2002-2013)

After years of work, the band finished the production of its second album, “Jagannath Orbit”, coincident to the arriving and joining of new musicians, in 2007. The album was released in October 2008 by the French label Musea Records. From this moment on, the new recording started being distributed in Europe and the rest of the world. “Jagannath Orbit” had remarkable critics globally. This released marked a favorable turn for the band.
This same year 2008, Anima Mundi back to the studios for producing its third album called “The Way”. It was released in October 2010 by Musea Record. This album has been the most Anima Mundi successful releasing so far. Well acclaimed world wide “The Way” brings Anima Mundi to the first places of progressive top list 2010.

Is not a secret that Anima Mundi has walked step by step the way to successfully introducing itself among the varied and abundant present day progressive rock scene worldwide. The present line up is shaped by José Manuel Govín on drums, Yarosky Corredera on bass, Carlos Sosa on vocals and the historical leaders and founders Virginia Peraza on keyboards and Roberto Díaz on guitars and vocals.

I´m glad to review this album that i discovered something like 3 months ago, sadly it seems that only a few people knows it, (Erik) but here i am, to share my feel and to suggest it to other people.

It´s a surprise to find this band, i love the fact that every country has at least one or two excellent bands which represent progressive rock, i thought Cuba was really far to have progressive rock bands, but i have found a couple of excellent bands, one of them is "Sintesis" which i wont talk this time obviously, but it´s another great band, and A2nima Mundi" which is why i am here.

I I will tell you a brief history of the band, they started in 1996 with the leader Roberto Diaz after graduating of Musical Composition (guitar was his speciality), and little by little he was gather another friends/musicians during the next 5 years , the majority of them studied deeply some instrument, like clarinet Anais Gomez, or bagpipe Regis Rodriguez, then they were playing and created this album called "Septentrion" which was released in 2002, sadly, due to the departure of Ariel Valdez, the band has had a "stagnation" period since then.

About the album: Okay i wont bore you anymore with those dates, let´s talk about the album. Here you will find 12 songs, the first one "Horizonte" is kind of introduction, and instrumental, in fact there are various instrumental tracks, this first track could sound as a new age track, so dont think that New Age is the way of the album, then "Por Siempre" is another instrumental, but this time we will find the predominative sound of bagpipe, i simply love it, it´s maybe what makes this album unique and special, the song could sound a bit folkish due to that bagpipes, but then when keys and drums appears, you will notice a clear Neo sound.

"Centinela" is the first song which includes vocals, not outstanding nothing special but if you like vocals in spanish you could like it, the song is again plenty of keys and some soft guitars, also i like to sing it. We will find a lot of bagpipe here, it´s the sound or instrument that takes the album, and i like it because it´s something different, i mean we could find bagpipes on Mago de Oz albums or some Metal albums, obviously in some folk music, but in a symphonic band it´s not usua and that´s why i liked this album so much, but be careful, because if you dont like the sound of this instrument, then you will get bored easily.

A beautiful example and song is "La Montaña del Vigia" which is again completely instrumental but sooo enjoyable, i use to repeat that song when the album is over, also it sound a bit gypsy. "Las Praderas del Corazon" is my favorite song, not the best song of the album in my opinion, but i simply love it, i love the sound, the rythm and vocals, here they dont show us their best and most complex creation, but you might like this song. To finish the album we will find 3 excellent songs "El Hallazgo", "El Umbral" and "Septentrion", here we will notice a blend of all their elements , folk and symphonic passages, also in El Umbral we will find the best moment of guitars, trhoug the album there are lots of acoustic and soft guitar sounds, but this time they take the lead role and show us an excellent sound, the last song is excellent, very proggy and never boring, i said this because the album´s lenght is over 70 minutes, i dont like so much albums with more than an hour of music, it´s a personal feeling, when the music is good no matter it´s lenght, but i just wanted to point that if you feel the same, maybe when you arrive to the last 2 songs you could be a bit bored.

Now, i am waiting for Erik´s review and then hope other people giving a chance to it, it´s not a masterpiece, but it´s a great album in my opinion, i like it so much and i will suggest it to you, 4 stars, highly recommendable to any progfan.

For those who are not familiar with this band called Anima Mundi, well let me tell you that first of all you will be surprised because they are a band from Cuba, nowadays it is not common to hear a prog band from that part of the globe, so that simple fact led me to discover the band few years ago when they released their first album entitled "Septentrion", which was a symphonic (with hints of Neo) prog album with a very original and unique style due to the predominant use of bagpipes, and vocals in Spanish.

Last year (2008) they at last released their second album, an album which I was really looking forward to listen to, and whose sound is different from their Septentrion sound, here we will find some different things and nice surprises. The name of this record is "Jagganath Orbit" which is produced by Roberto Díaz, leader of the band and a very nice person who I've been in contact with, the running time is over 65 minutes of great music divided in 7 tracks.

Jagganath Orbit kicks off with the longest song of the album, which named "We are the Light" is reaching almost 18 minutes, and a track that shows the band's step forward and their new sound. It starts with a melodic and spacey background, some piano here and there and other noises, after the first minute keyboards enter along with drums and the other instruments making a clear 90´s symphonic sound ala Spock´s Beard in some moments, then, vocals enter and this was my first surprise, they decided now to sing in English, they do it and sound good, but I personally prefer bands singing in their native language. There is a great instrumentation I like a lot the background during this epic, there are also a sitar sound and some nice guitar riffs. The song has some comes and go's, small musical changes inside it, a predominant keyboard sound and a great progressiveness. The second half of the song has some acoustic guitars and a calmed rhythm, it is not the bombastic keyboard sound, it is more melodic. But then, the initial style returns and the rest of the song continue like this.

The second track is "The Awaken Dreamer in the Soul Garden Dreams the Flower Planets", a long name to a shorter song that has a mid tempo rhythm with some guitars, and after a few moments it turns into a softer and calmer song, with synth effects like the sound of air and a spacey feeling inside it, an instrumental song, another nice surprise.

"Toward the Adventure" has some synth effects that make me feel like being walking in an unknown place, then the song becomes stronger with the help of guitars and other instruments, this time the vocals return, this track is very good but not my favourite though I enjoy the changes they do during the song.

"There's a Place not Faraway" keeps the same line of the previous song, I mean the musical direction and style is very alike, even the running time of both songs just have a one minute gap, the vocals sound very sweet in moments, and the guitar solos with a constant drumming sound and of course the keys as background make this a very good song, though a bit catchy, but it does not lose its essence.

Suddenly, you may thing the same song its running but actually there is a new track, the title track "Jagganath Orbit" (In the Orbit of Love) that lasts 11 minutes with again some time and mood changes through it, but following the same album's style, I mean there are some moments on the song that reminds me to previous tracks, in other words I believe there are some repetitive or unnecessary moments, though the song as a whole is very good actually.

The next song "Rhythm of the Spheres" starts with a didgeridoo sound, then keyboards and small changes, then guitar and drums, and then again some softly and well placed keyboard sound, I have to admit that in some moments the reminded me to Flower Kings, well, the song structure is always building up something, so you can be there listening to the track and enjoying what you are listening to, because the music maintains you there, expecting something. After 5 minutes, the song makes a little stop, those spacey effects and noises appear again. Some minutes later the song changes again, and due to some great sounds they produce, in my opinion the song is becoming better and better through the minutes. Probably my favourite track of the album, beautiful.

And finishing, we have "Sanctuary", the last 5 minutes of the album are filled with nice symphonic prog, and honestly this again reminds me to TFK, nice song anyway.

There is a point that I noticed since the very first listen, because I believe it's obvious, and it is the lack of bagpipes, I mention this because in their first record what made me love the band was their unique and original use of bagpipes in their music, I must admit I missed it a lot in this album.

Jagganath Orbit, is a very good album actually, it does not matter if they changed their sound, I believe the production is great and their new musical style is good as well, I like the album very much and I consider it is very complete and consistent, though right now I still prefer the Septentrion sound, I am also pleased with Jagganath Orbit, and since now I am looking forward to their next release. My final grade, 4 stars, take a look to the Caribbean prog, there are worth listening bands.

It is not common to see (hear) a progressive rock band from Cuba, but when I first listened to Anima Mundi, I really love their music and say "wow", since then, I've been following their efforts. First it was "Septentrion", a promising debut album with symphonic and folk tendencies, also the only one with Spanish vocals; then it was "Jagganath Orbit" where they expressed their skill at their highest level; and now is the turn of "The Way".

When I knew they would release a new album I was really excited because I love their music, and now, after several listens, I can say I am pleased, they did not let me down. This 2010 they gave light to this ambitious album called "The Way" which features four compositions, and a total time of 58 minutes, so as you can imagine you will find long songs here.

It opens with "Time to Understand", a fourteen-minute track where you can easily appreciate their symphonic tendencies, and where you will listen to first-class progressive rock. Throughout those fourteen minutes they offer a salad of sounds, a mixture of rhythms and moods and a great musical execution, it is evident that we are listening to trained and talented musicians.

In a symphonic prog band, I normally feel attracted by the sound of keyboards, and this time is not the exception, so pay attention to Virginia Pedraza's work, it is awesome. Returning to the song, when it reaches the eight or ninth minute it slows down, it makes great changes in mood and rhythm, a delicate guitar appears. But then the music begin to increase again until the final minute where it fades out.

"Spring Knocks on the Door of Men" is a giant composition that reaches twenty-six minutes, so you better sit comfortable and listen to this wonderful track. The first part covers the first four minutes, where you'll listen to soft and charming instrumental music, then it makes a little stop, delicate guitars and vocal appear and give it a new direction. The rhytm is semi-slow but it easily catches your attention, it keeps like this until minute eight where a new musical passage begins. Again, instrumental music with great keyboard work and also wonderful guitars; it is important to say, that despite I may feel more attracted by guitars and keys, all the instruments are equally important here, so open your ears and appreciate also bass and drums, because they are great.

At minute ten, there is a beautiful passage where you can close your eyes and let the music take you to another realm, I imagine myself in a beautiful place where peace reigns, with fields of green and pure air, just figure it out. There is a fantastic change after minute fifteen, the song explodes and becomes stronger and at the same time creates a new atmosphere, I also can imagine this part as if it was part of a film, in a scene where a new situation is taking place.

What a song this length can offer speaks for itself, there are a lot of sounds, emotions, textures, colors, images and several elements that help the music succeed and left a mark on the listener, as this band has left with me. After minute twenty there is another beautiful passage where a delicate flute appears accompanied by acoustic guitar and a nice keyboard atmosphere. Seconds later vocals return and add its special flavor. The final part of this is just the conclusion of a great effort, an ambitious track that reached his goal, at least with me.

Now the other two tracks are the shorter ones, despite they can also be considered as long ones. "Flying to the Sun" offers nine minutes of cool symphonic prog music. It starts with a mellotron sound which always produces me goosebumps, then vocals enter and a bombastic rhythm appears. A couple of minutes later nice bass lines mark the pass of a new passage where some choral keyboard appears and an excellent guitar work by Roberto Díaz highlights the track. Before minute six there is another change, actually in the mood because of the keyboards one can imagine some kind of terror scene, so there is a sense of tension and nervousness. The music itself is conducting you to several ways, you are exploring and knowing them, until you find your way: The Way.

And finally the shortest track, "Cosmic Man" which I have to admit is my least favorite on this album, which does not mean it is a bad track, not at all, not even weak, but in moments (the first minutes) I felt it repetitive. However later, more specific in the instrumental parts I felt caught again and my interest increased again. The last couple of minutes produce that sensation of an end, the music little by little is vanishing and saying goodbye.

Anima Mundi from Cuba is a band worth listening that I highly recommend. So far their three albums have caused several things on me and I fully enjoy them. Now, I am looking forward to their next effort, and I keep my fingers crossed in order to see them on stage, maybe soon, I don't know. My final grade will be four strong stars, it would be more accurate if I could add half star so it would be a 4.5 star record.

ANIMA MUNDI The Lamplighter : GREAT album for any PROG music fan! Very nice CD with magic artworks from famous artist Ed Unitsky invites listeners to discover the new music world: it's something new between Camel (Rajaz) and The Flower Kings' ballads and it's really NEW step for the band! It's original, with typical Anima Mundi's music features (in harmonies, for instance), and not a "clone" of the Great PROG Ancestors' style - but you can also hear Yes, Genesis mood there… Also - very good and serious echo of Classical music: from Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet - Dance of the knights to Edward Grieg - Peer Gynt. Oh - and there isn't any 'Cuban Rumba-Mambo-Cha-Cha-Cha' at the album from musicians of this country - only Classic Epic Prog! (lol) If to speak more seriously… This album gives you a very big (and rare now!) treasure: beautiful bright melodies that you can remember at once! For sure, with great acoustic and el guitars by Roberto Diaz (he has the same sort of melodic energy that… Steve Hackett, I would dare to say this after all AM's albums and live shows !) and… I love MOOG solos and "violins' pizzicato" moments (thanks, Virginia Peraza)! In general, pleasantly to notice a very "smart" arrangement of the album: sometimes flute notes, exactly when/where they MUST to be, sometimes drum's moment and bass' line… These things are important there, because all of them work on a whole impression that is 'GREAT' ! I enjoy new singer's voice very much as well - if you love John Wetton's/Greg Lake's style, - you will join to me and Emmanuel Pirko Farrath ;) Yeah, it's conceptual album in 2 parts, a classic PROG themes (Love, Light, Creation)… but deep and SINCERE lyrics SPEAK with the listener… again. Really good poetry in a way, maybe, of The Flower Kings' one. And again and again I want to say about MUSIC: there are many sweet and touching moments in the album, and I am especially glad to meet there powerful development of bright melodies that you've already remembered (they was before in vocal or guitar part for example). …I want to play this such a beautiful album again and again, and I do it! Anima Mundi (Roberto Díaz, Virginia Peraza, Yaroski Corredera, José Manuel Govín, Emmanuel Pirko Farrath) - thank you very much for the best PROG emotions with "the Lamplighter" !
