At the end of a brief but brilliant career - his compositions cover a period of just over six years - Giovanni Battista Pergolesi worte his last two works, the 'Stabat Mater' and the 'Salve Regina' in C minor. Nicola Porpora's 'Salve Regina' for solo voice and instruments, recorded here for the first time, was probably written during the composer's stay in Venice as 'maestro di cappella' of the Ospedale degli Incurabili, from 1726 to 1733, no doubt for one of the young ladies attending the musical establishment. La Cappella de'Turchini is made up mostly of Neapolitan musicians who regularly work together under the direction of the group's founder Antonio Florio, forming a close-knit musical and theatrical troupe. The ensemble specializes in performance of the repertoires of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the golden age of the Neapolitan school. With Antonio Florio, La Cappella de'Turchini has revived works by several hitherto forgotten composers of the Baroque perod. These include Provencale (maestro di cappella until 1701 of the Conservatoire della Pieta' de'Turchini), Caresana, Trabaci, Veneziano, Netti, Sabino, Paisiello, Piccini, Jommelli and others. The music of these composers stands at the meeting-point of Moorish, Italian, Greek, Spanish and French cultures. La Cappella de'Turchini aims ot recreate the original spirit of their works. The ensemble appears regularly at important venues across Europe.
