Japanese Edition with bonus track

Jack-of-all-trades Christian Rivel manages to have several bands, his own label and now also a kind of solo-project, called AUDIOVISION, where he has once more united several quite illustrious names around him, among them Lars Chriss (LIONS SHARE) and also former THUNDER bassist Mikael Hцglund, but that not enough, also in terms of guest musicians “The Calling” is more than remarkable, I’ll just throw out the names: Bruce Kulick (KISS), Mic Michaeli (EUROPE), Jeff Scott Soto (TALISMAN, Malmsteen), Eric Clayton (SAVIOUR MACHINE).

Musically we get Hard Rock with an at times pretty strong Metal influence, which shows the variability of Christian, as NARNIA are rather neo-classically influenced and DIVINEFIRE fire off the heavy Bombast Power Metal mortar and almost all songs have one thing in common, the pretty heavy guitars, which bring in a nice heaviness, but without neglecting the catchiness (never drifting off into sappiness, though), but keeping the quality very high at all times.

Now AUDIOVISION surely do not bring any innovation into this genre, but they show so much energy and variability that I can more than forgive them, be it the driving, riffy opener “The Calling“, the super catchy “Read Between The Lines“, the fast “Show Me The Way“ with its ultra catchy chorus or the excellent THE SWEET cover version “Love Is Like Oxygen“, all songs keep the same high level, which is more than adequately realised by the musicians, here the experience without a doubt comes through. And the quality also is high enough not to need the name dropping to promote the album.

Apart from Lars Chriss we also get a bunch of guest composers, such as Carljohann Grimmark (NARNIA), Tommy Denander or also Mikael Andersson (SPACE ODYSSEY), while Christian took care of all the lyrics, which again strongly propagate the Christian belief, but without getting preachy, so not an excuse not to check out this album.

All in all “The Calling“ has turned out to be an outstanding Heavy Rock album, which also crosses over into Metal every now and then and is framed by a clear, powerful production, which basically should convince any fan of this style. Why AUDIOVISION get half a point less than DIVINEFIRE? Well, DIVINEFIRE have even more fire… (Online August 27, 2005)
