Following an extremely promising first album devoted to Dowland, here is another chance to hear Damien Guillon, accompanied by his ensemble Le Banquet Céleste, in a programme of solo cantatas by J. S. Bach.

A noted recitalist, Damien Guillon is also invited to appear under the direction of such leading conductors as Philippe Herreweghe, William Christie, Masaaki Suzuki, and Vincent Dumestre.

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Performer: Damien Guillon
Conductor: Damien Guillon
Orchestra/Ensemble: Le Banquet Céleste

Reviews:This program was obviously and smartly chosen to provide separation between the cantatas (cantatas and organ solos alternate on the disc), but also, presumably, to showcase the talents of organist Maude Gratton, as well as countertenor Damien Guillon. Gratton, after all, is the only person who participates in all four works. Two of BWV 170’s three arias and all three of BWV 35’s arias are scored for obbligato organ, and two movements of BWV 35 were adopted from a lost concerto, rescored for organ and orchestra. So why is there no picture of Gratton? Guillon appears on the cover and in the booklet, and there’s even a picture of the organ, for heaven’s sake. There is plenty of unused space on three divider pages and the blank back cover. The guild of organists should investigate.

But Guillon is unquestionably the chief honcho in this production, responsible for its success or failure. His opening aria in BWV 170 is gentle and soothing. The second aria seems to fall apart, but Guillon regains his mojo in the animated finale. BWV 35 is a more extroverted work, and Guillon manages its rapid passagework with ease. Gratton satisfies throughout, playing the concerto movements with aplomb and raising the roof with her explosive attack in the great Fantasy and Fugue. This disc earns a good mark, but it won’t displace some formidable competition: Andreas Scholl with Philippe Herreweghe (Harmonia Mundi) and Robin Blaze with Masaaki Suzuki (BIS). If you prefer a female alto, Bernarda Fink with Petra Müllejans (also Harmonia Mundi) is hard to beat. Of course, all of these alternatives offer other cantatas, rather than organ works, to fill their discs.
