is the twenty-fourth studio album by director, composer, actress and singer , released by on November 4, 1985. Consisting mainly of classic show tunes, the album marked a major shift in 's career. had spent ten years appearing in musicals and singing standards on her albums in the 1960s. Beginning with the album in 1971 and ending with the album in 1984, sang mostly rock and disco oriented songs for records. Noted composer personally penned additional lyrics for the songs and on request of the singer. The album, originally released on the label and subsequently re-released by and , was a critical and commercial success. First certified gold by the RIAA on January 13, 1986, it reached four times platinum on January 31, 1995. This album has gone to sell 7.5 million copies worldwide. The album was accompanied by a television special, . The original LP and cassette releases contained 11 tracks. The subsequent CD release added the bonus track of . 's abandonment of was the worst thing that happened to the theater in the '60s. Her retreat from theater music on record was less of a loss, if only because she had tended to focus on second-rank composers and obscure songs by first-rate ones, while practically ignoring, for example, . When she returned to show songs in 1985, she reversed these failings. Now, the singer who had never done much with , or finally felt confident enough to take on from from , from , and a medley from , and she did them well. Even better, on seven tracks with 's name on them, she proved the perfect intepreter of the most contemporary and intellectual of 's writers, whether singing his lyrics over the music of (another composer she'd largely neglected) from or making the most of material drawn from shows like , and . collaborated with , penning special lyrics for songs like and even his standard, The result was an album that repositioned some of 's best in a pop context and showed that was still at her best when presenting the dramatically satisfying story songs of the theater. Apparently, many longtime fans agreed: At sales over three million, was 's most commercially successful album in five years. The Billboard 200 is a ranking of the 200 highest-selling music albums in the United States, published weekly by Billboard magazine. 11-23-85 50 #1 for 3 weeks 1/13/86 1/13/86 1/31/95 500,000 units shipped 1 million units shipped.
