The story of Canned Heat is the story of imperishable music, of hit singles and albums that captured the spirit of the times, and of glorious performances at epochal events like the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and the 1969 Woodstock Festival, as well as legendary venues like the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco.

Above all, the story of Canned Heat is one of triumphant perseverance, for despite all its successes and disasters, the band has maintained its musical integrity and commitment to the blues and continues to be admired and active to this day. When the band appeared at Rockpalast in 1998, Fito de la Parra and Larry Taylor, who used to play bass and now plays guitar, were joined by vocalist and slide guitarist Robert Lucas and bassist Greg Kage.

During their performance, the band plays many of their most popular songs, including On The Road Again, in which de la Parra attempts to replicate Wilson's extraordinary, haunting vocals while the band recreates some of the mesmerizing magic of the hit record. On Going Up The Country, de la Parra also lets his inner Alan Wilson do the talking. "We're going to take you to Woodstock," he announces before the song - an irresistible invitation for listeners, and for us listening now, over twenty years later.

New frontman Lucas, a powerful, declamatory singer, sings lead on Let's Work Together and also on songs like William Harris' Bullfrog Blues, Amphetamine Annie, a cautionary tale about excessive drug use originally recorded on the 1968 album Boogie With Canned Heat (if only the band had heeded its own warning!), and his own songs See These Tears and Iron Horse. Lucas' slide guitar and Taylor's lead guitar are subtle and sweeping throughout, and the whole band plays with an absolutely convincing blues feel. Since then, the band's lin-up has continued to evolve (Lucas left the band in 2000 and sadly died of an overdose in 2008 at the age of 46), and there are now over fifty musicians who are members of Canned Heat. However, in 2019, another member of the classic band lineup, Larry Taylor, died of cancer at the age of 77. Fito de le Parra is thus the only survivor of Canned Heat from the '60s, but although the band is regularly booked for events such as The Flower Power Cruise and Woodstock reunions, it transcends the era in which it made its name. As their 1998 appearance on Rockpalast proved, and every performance since has re-emphasized, Canned Heat have never been a mere nostalgia band. Rather, they have always been a blues band of irresistible power that has been entertaining audiences for more than fifty eventful years.
