Chilliwack are the legendary Canadian rock band best remembered for their biggest hits "My Girl (Gone Gone Gone)", "I Believe", "Whatcha Gonna Do (When I'm Gone)", "Fly At Night", "Lonesome Mary" and "Communication Breakdown", all of which charted in the US and Canada. The latter three were originally released on 'Dreams, Dreams, Dreams', 'Lights From The Valley', and 'Breakdown in Paradise' via the legendary Canadian indie label Mushroom Records, famous for launching the career of Heart as well as Doucette, Paul Horn, and Iain Matthews. Mushroom ceased operations in the late 1970's following the death of its legendary co-founder Shelly Segal, and the vinyl - only catalog was never released on CD or made available digitally. The 'Dreams, Dreams, Dreams' album is now finally being reissued, re-mastered with bonus tracks, new liner notes and photographs by bandleader Bill Henderson. Chilliwack continue to perform live at festivals and casinos across North America.
Dreams Dreams Dreams, is my favorite Chilliwack album, bar none. In fact, it is one of my 10 desert island discs. I was really hoping for a pristine result that would blow me out of the water. Instead, I got a mixed bag. Yes, the sound is for the most part pristine. I've had so many copies of Dreams over the years and this absolutely sounds better than any of them. I gave it a listen with my Bose noise cancelling headphones and my goodness, I heard things that I never heard before! That's always a real bonus.
Unfortunately, it suffers from sibilance (distorted S sounds) throughout. There's software to correct that, although it's a complex process. Perhaps the master tapes were that bad and this is the result after doctoring. Particularly affected songs are Roll On, Baby Blue and Something Better. But other than that, I'm thrilled that one of my favorite albums of all time is FINALLY available on CD!
As for bonus material - Reach is slightly different (and shorter) than the B-side I have of it, but this is a much cleaner recording. It would have fit nicely on Dreams when originally released. The songwriting tape of Something Better is a bit of a revelation and is a great insight into the songwriting process. Of note, Mary Lou and Me (included as a bonus track on the Lights From The Valley re-issue) was the B-side to Fly at Night but somehow ended up on the Lights CD instead of Dreams. This surprised me but I think it would have been a better fit with Lights anyway.
The booklet and liner notes are magnificent. They document, from Bill's perspective, some of the ideas and inspirations which went into the songwriting. They also cover the changes and eventual demise of the original band. They continue from CD to CD, like an ongoing story. It's sad in its own way, but the addition of new players eventually sent the band into a new direction and to greater heights than ever before.
I was also saddened to learn of the passing of Glenn Miller. I knew he had been sick, but didn't know he was gone. From this version of Chilliwack, RIP Glenn Miller and Howard Froese.Review by Solitary Man, Amazon.ca
Yes another 5-star rating and deservedly so. I am so excited Dreams was finally available on CD. Dreams was released in 1976 about the time Heart released "Dreamboat Annie". (The two have "dream" in their titles - interesting). Both were recorded at Mushroom Studios in Vancouver and the sound quality was unparalleled considering almost 40 years ago. Mushroom Studios obviously had excellent engineers plus a very important tool - their Neve mixing console. The high frequency response is very extended as a result. Seemingly both vinyl and this CD release have obvious silibance issues that is very evident on Baby Blue, Something Better, etc. The "ssssss" can be very hissy in places. Just the way it is. Nonetheless I love the music here and sound quality good overall comparable to the original vinyl release.
