This is a prestige issue if ever there was one, not so much for its music (though in fact this very apt coupling is not otherwise available) as for its presentation and aural glamour. Naturally DGG is proud to have its new contract with the Boston Orchestra, and the German engineers have done marvels in a new environment at capturing the characteristic Boston sound.

Composer: Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Alexander Scriabin
Conductor: Claudio Abbado

Reviews: It sounds as well as I have ever known it on rival RCA records. Symphony Hall, Boston, is marvellous for concerts, but tricky for recording, as the bathroom acoustics of Boston records from Koussevitzky onwards have often revealed. When Andrew Raeburn, formerly recording producer for Argo, went to Boston as Leinsdorf's personal assistant, his experience of working in King's College Chapel made him suggest that in future the orchestra should be recorded not on the stage of Symphony Hall but on the auditorium floor with screens around. Apparently this advice has been followed by the DGG engineers too, and the result is that the gorgeous ambiance is retained with a greater degree of clarity.

Not that clarity is the essential point of Abbado's approach to Debussy and Ravel. What with a German record company working with an American orchestra on French music conducted by an Italian, it is not surprising that the result is richly cosmopolitan rather than strictly authentic. Anyone who wants to wallow in a warm bath of French impressionism rather than be coolly stimulated will love this record.

Sometimes on record I have been disappointed that Abbado has not relaxed in the way he can in the concert hail. Here at last he seems completely at home, and if the procession in "Fetes" is as vigorous and colourful as anything seen in an Italian town and Ravel's daybreak bursts out in Mediterranean glory, that is certainly one way of looking at it. One might object that Abbado's view of the marking Modéri in the central section of "Fetes" is wrong in making it faster than the earlier animé. One might object too that Debussy's request for muted trumpets merely when the procession theme comes in does not sanction the use of off-stage trumpets (a device that Stokowski too adopted). The point is that with playing as warmly committed as this, the performances tend to carry one over detailed objections. The solo work as in the Ozawa Boston record is splendid, though in fact in the "Danse générale" of Daphnis (taken very fast indeed) the woodwind triplets are not quite so clean as in Munch's record of the complete version of the ballet now making a welcome reappearance on the Victrola label. Incidentally, Abbado uses the optional chorus parts from the complete ballet. The Abbado approach is less successful in the brief fillup, Ravel's Pavane—a sweet, glutinous account.
