Melodic Hard Rock

Germany's Dominoe is principally guitarist Robert Papst and vocalist Jorg Sieber. Their career dates to 1988 where they had a breakout international hit Here I Am, thanks to its use in a Renault R5 ad. They disbanded in 1990 after two albums, only to resurrect themselves in 2002. Naked But Dressed is their third album since regrouping, and the fifth overall.

Simply stated, Naked But Dressed is an solid and entertaining platter of AOR melodic rock songs. And there's a lot of them, 14 original songs and three bonus tracks. There's not a single bad or dull tune here and, even with the amount, no filler. You're getting your money's worth.

The overarching strength of this album is the songwriting, powered by excellent guitar work and stunning vocal arrangements. Some of the vocal arrangements come as duets with Sieber performing with Larry Hoppen (Orleans), Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie) and Jimi Jamison (Survivor). Yet, more interesting, and heard throughout, are the lead and backing vocals provided by Janina Dietz (Janina And The Deeds). She's simply perfect, and quite fabulous on One Last Sugar.

While most of this straight up melodic rock, Papst and Sieber throw in a few wild cards. Notable are A Good Way Down and My Girl, which offer an interesting blues edge, the latter with some harp. Another highlight is the aforementioned mentioned One Last Sugar. It's a huge catchy rocker, and Dietz simply steals the vocal stage. For the bonus tracks, as they've done on previous albums, Dominoe give you retakes of their hit, Here I Am, but also Let's Talk About Life. The third bonus is merely a radio edit of Naked.

Bottom line: Dominoe's Naked But Dressed is nearly flawless AOR melodic ear candy.
