The Dvorak Stabat Mater turned out to be the final recording made by the beloved dean of American choral directors, Robert Shaw, who taped it in Atlanta in November 1998, two months before his death, at 82.

In an interview with NPR's Martin Goldsmith that fills out the second disc of the Telarc set, Shaw describes the Stabat Mater as "a work of extraordinary vitality and almost mystical communication," qualities fully captured by his deeply felt performance.

Soprano Christine Goerke has a rather tremulous vibrato that doesn't blend well with the other, fine soloists (Marietta Simpson, Stanford Olsen and Nathan Berg). But Shaw's expert Atlanta Symphony Chorus, rich and smoothly blended in sound, enunciates the Latin text clearly and responds alertly to the quick shifts of color and dynamics. Dvorak's orchestral writing here has many of the fingerprints we recognize from his symphonies, and the Atlanta musicians rise to the occasion. The Czech conductors Vaclav Talich and Rafael Kubelik bring a special native authority. Still, the Shaw, by its valedictory nature, is in a class of its own, while Telarc's sonics are the best of any available version.
Bravo to RCA for reissuing one of Shaw's greatest recordings with his fabled Shaw Chorale, their 1960 performance of Bach's B-Minor Mass. If this choral masterpiece is now firmly established in the repertory of America's professional choruses, it's largely because of Shaw's advocacy on his cross-country tours. His account is authentic in scale yet responds vividly to the grandeur and profound spirituality of this music. The soloists, choral and orchestral work are all first-rate. Baroque performance
practice has changed considerably in the last four decades, but this classic account will never feel dated. The sound, too, is astonishingly good. (Chicago Tribune)
