Dying Fetus have long surpassed the need for an actual introduction on any review, interview, site, magazine, etc. Formed since 1991 and founded by the one and only John Gallagher, they command an army of rabid death metal fans world wide. When they're not touring venues across the globe, they're in the studio recording. So finally, after a long three-year wait, the aptly titled Reign Supreme is the seventh full-length Dying Fetus album to be unleashed upon the earth.

Having long since shed the grindcore influence present on many of their earlier releases, Dying Fetus have been testing the waters of brutal/technical death metal and are passing into the realm thereof. Having reduced themselves to a three piece band since Descend into Depravity, their latest effort seals the fact that this deciding factor has proven itself to be the most appropriate decision and gives more focus on the three remaining members' technicality talents.

Gallagher, as always, fails to disappoint with brain melting solo stretches and quite possibly some of the heaviest-to-date sluggish, brutiful riffs with intermingling technicalities. Though in doting on the technical aspects of Reign Supreme, the band have kept it simple in terms of layering and have stuck to keeping the content where it is completely do-able live as a three piece group, having been formerly (usually) comprised of five members.

The production clarity puts a nice sheen on the instruments, bringing the thundering snare drum to life and giving the guitars a noise-free, crisp distortion that ensures the plethora of guitar notes sound just as clean picked as they actually are. This is a great upgrade for Dying Fetus, as having poor production was a drawback with their 2009 release.

"Invert the Idols", "Second Skin" and "Revisionist Past" are the most brick-shittingly intense songs to be found on Reign Supreme, however one song reigns dominate over all others with one of the most bru-tastic introductions found in any death metal song to date.

"It's not my fault I'm pregnant and I love drugs. Who cares. Fuck the baby. Let it die."

That is the first line in the uterus-desecrating track "From Womb to Waste", an audio tie-in spoken by what sounds like a young woman. When first heard, this will take aback even the most seasoned of metal veterans that still contain any ounce of shock sensitivity.

In short, this is the same Dying Fetus from years past. However, they've shed some extra weight and come out on top of their game more mature and focused. Technicality abound, the blasting drum beats and crushing guitar play well off of each other, leaving the blood pumping bass to tie everything together into a smoother presentation. Better audio quality really immerses the listener in the experience, and catchy grooves make sure that the listener stays captivated. Another great release of 2012.
