Perhaps what strikes the ear first about Alberto Ginastera's music is the convincing and intelligible way in which the composer utilizes dissonance to create lucid gestures and expressions. Ginastera seems to know just where and how to place his sonic gnarls and knots so that that they appear as beauty marks instead of blemishes. The Three Pieces for Piano (1940) readily exemplify this aspect of Ginastera's musical language. The opening piece, "Cuyana," depicts the tranquility of the Andes with only occasional, but evocative harmonic surprises. Its rhapsodic lyricism is peppered with lush chromaticism, as well as a few "stray" tones that leap quirkily across an octave before disappearing. The second piece, "Nortena," begins with a series of mysterious grumblings that reappear throughout beneath the plaintive melody; throughout, "Nortena" moves dramatically between extremes of stark, unaccompanied melody, and heavy chordal gestures. The final piece, "Criolla," combines Ginastera's harmonic eclecticism with his creative use of driving, percussive rhythms. The joyous opening is contrasted with a middle section so lush as to almost become a caricature; the syncopated rhythms and angular melodies of the beginning then return before the work draws to a close.Tracks:
