All the symphonic works by A. Glazunow (and many of them for the first time) have reached the audience due to the unique series of recordings "Anthology of Russian Symphony Music" made bv the USSR Symphony Orchestra under Evgeni Svetlanov. Each interpretation of the conductor is the result of the profound understanding of Ihe author's concept, inspired by a powerful creative individuality and high performing mastery of the conductor.Tracklist:
The programme presents Glazunov's works created during the two decades. The earliest among them is the orchestral overture "Carnival" (1893).
Three memorial orchestral pieces created in the first decade of the 20th century — Preludes, Op. 85—are sort of musical epitaphs; they are connected with the dramatic and oppressive for Glazunov events — deceases of the two persons which meant much to the composer — V. Stasov and N. Rimskv-Korsakov.
Symphonic prologue "To the Memory of N. Gogol" was written in 1909 to the inauguration of the monument to Gogol in Moscow. The work was performed at a concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary7 of the great writer.
Practically unknown ballet scene "Fortune-Telling and Dance" dated by 1904 and dedicated to Maria Petipa (a daughter of a famous Peter- bourg choreographer Marius Petipa) prima-ballet dancer of the Mariinsky Theatre.
Finnish Sketches (1912) along with the "Karelian Legend" and "Finnish Fantasia" proved the interest of A. Glazunov to the folk tales and musical folklore of the Northern land.
