DG’s mining of its vast catalogue continues with the Original Masters series of budget-priced reissues, of which this well-filled three-disc Hans Hotter set is a highly attractive entry. Hotter’s superb, black-tinged instrument and aliveness to the texts indisputably place him among the great singers of the last century. So this set is an enticing proposition for those familiar with his artistry and for newcomers interested in an overview of Hotter’s distinguished career. But the set is weighted toward the latter part of that career; all of the second disc and parts of the other two were recorded in the early-to-mid-1970s when Hotter was in his mid-60s. (Despite the album’s title, some tracks were recorded in 1975). He was still singing with insight and expressivity, but his remarkably well-preserved vocal instrument had nevertheless become darker, drier, less flexible, and more effortful.
So while it’s impressive that Hotter’s vocal powers remained fairly strong at this point, we do hear some discomfort in songs such as Schubert’s Die Stadt. And even as Der Doppelganger cuts to the heart, it’s necessary to overlook the wobble on sustained high notes, although listening past technical imperfections should come easy when you’re caught up in Hotter’s angst-drenched interpretation. Wolf’s Soldat I is another example of rough vocalization that indicates the voice lacks the flexibility to do what the singer wants it to do. Most of the time though, the singing is secure enough not to be a factor. Thus the legato that always had been a ravishing part of Hotter’s vocal arsenal still makes an effect in Wolf’s Alles endet, was entstehet; and in lighthearted folkish songs such as Wolf’s Der Musikant, Hotter shows he has the rhythmic command to move his big, dark voice with some agility. In the Loewe group the years melt away as Hotter seizes on the songs’ opportunities for dramatic narrative and even humor.
The rest of the 80-minute third disc consists of opera arias. After a 1961 duet from Aida, they’re all from 1942-43 when the voice was in glorious shape. Everything’s in German, including the Toreador Song and fine versions of Iago’s Credo and his “dream” aria from Otello–but the Wagner items are best. Hotter’s Flying Dutchman never has been matched, and this 1943 Die Frist ist um, with Hotter’s voice firm, rich, and easy, is gripping.
Almost all of the first disc consists of Hotter’s last Schubert Winterreise recorded in 1961. If I did not know the Music & Arts issue of his wartime recording or the EMI 1954 version with Gerald Moore, I’d be delighted with it. The voice is slightly drier than on the earlier traversals, but his identification with the words and the music remains complete.
DG’s transfers are excellent–even the wartime studio recordings sound fresh. No texts or translations are included, which is a shame. But if you know German, you won’t need them–Hotter’s diction always was superb. What you should know though, is whether and to what degree this set will duplicate items in your collection. The 1961 Winterreise hasn’t been available in a while, but all eight of the wartime opera arias are among the dozen issued by Preiser. Hotter fans probably also own the three discs of lieder released on Testament and originally recorded in the bloom of Hotter’s prime years in the 1950s, which are generally preferable to these later DGs. Three of DG’s four Loewe songs are on Testament, as are five of the 17 Wolf songs, two of the eight non-Winterreise Schuberts, one of the three Brahms titles, and one of the six Strauss songs. Remember though, that it’s the titles, not the recordings, that are duplicated.
