When this album was released in 1993, it immediately made sensation in the press and the media. It must be said that it was in the wake of the immense success achieved by Jordi Savall in the aftermath of Alain Corneau's film Tous les mains du monde, based on Pascal Quignard's novel-script, scene of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe (Jean-Pierre Marielle) and Marin Marais (Gérard Depardieu), two great violists of the seventeenth century. Additional soundtracks, well done by Jordi Savall, a great violist of the 20th century, have earned him the Cesar award for best film music, the Charles Cros Academy Grand Prize and the Soloist of the Year at Victories of Music. It was an unprecedented success that saw the austere and confidential repertoire of viola da gamba arrive at the top of the Top 50! The collection of the Cantigas of Santa Maria constitutes one of the largest compilations of the thirteenth century reached. Composed in part by the King of Castile Alphonse the Wise (Alfonso el Sabio) at the head of an artists' studio, between 1250 and 1280, these mystical cantigas (mystical songs), but not intended for the liturgy, were very popular throughout the Hispanic peninsula until the 15th century. This music of vernacular inspiration, with the naive Marian fervor, is inspired by many melodies of Arabic or Jewish origin or influence, by their mode or rhythm. It is a vast corpus of more than 400 songs, existing in the form of 4 manuscripts that overlap more or less. Of course, a few pioneers had led the way, including René Clemencic, Thomas Binkley (already with Montserrat Figueras), Esther Lamandier and Joel Cohen, but the quasi-scientific work of Jordi Savall made this joyful music popular overnight. fervent, thanks to a colored instrumentation imagined by Jordi Savall, his singers (magnificent Montserrat Figueras) and his musicians, giving an exceptional vitality to a music located at the borders of styles and peoples and participating in the birth of our Western scholarly music. Written on texts glorifying the miracles and the goodness of the Virgin, this music aims to please as much as to move, sometimes reaching a great poetic and mystical density. The approach of Jordi Savall, the programs of his concerts and his recordings make music an instrument of mediation for the understanding between peoples and cultures. His work continues to be rewarded throughout the world, as for example in Louvain, where the Catholic University awarded him the title of Doctor honoris causa or UNESCO who appointed him Artist for Peace. The reissue of this famous recording was carried out with care, thanks to a new editing and multi-channel masting, which perfectly makes justice to the sounds of the old instruments and to the spatialization of the ensemble.
