This Japanese box set contains three consecutive entries in King Crimson's live and studio archival releases. The specific volumes in question are the tenth, 11th, and 13th from Discipline Global Mobile's Collectors' Club mail-order-only series covering Live in Central Park, NYC '74, the pre-Krim Discipline: Live at Moles Club, 1981, and the last gasp of the '90s double-trio incarnation on the Nashville Rehearsals, 1997. The July 1, 1974, concert in Central Park was the final King Crimson performance by the '70s quartet. While the recording is very good - not great - the group's spirited musical antics more than make up for any lack of audio fidelity. With the notable exception of "21st Century Schizoid Man," the band draws primarily from material on the Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Starless and Bible Black, and Red albums, respectively. This set of musicians shared a rare synergy. It is evident in the sheer terror heard spewing from David Cross' violin and in the sadistic pleasure of Robert Fripp's incendiary guitar solos. That same relentless vibe controls the rhythm section as well. Percussionist Bill Bruford and bassist John Wetton carve new dimensions into "Exiles" and "Fracture" - mutually propelling the grooves and increasing the overall fury of the set. The second disc features the '80s quartet shortly before the "official" re-formation of King Crimson in 1981. Their initial moniker was Discipline and featured returning Crimson members Robert Fripp on guitar, Bill Bruford on percussion, with guitarist, vocalist, and lyricist Adrian Belew and bass player Tony Levin. The quartet made their public debut at the Moles Club in Bath, England, on April 30, 1981, and this Collectors' Club volume is dedicated to that high-energy inauguration. From the first polyrhythmic strains of "Discipline" there is the immediate feeling that the band is actively seeking change. Even classics such as "Red" and "Larks' Tongues in Aspic (Part II)" take on a unique visage thanks in part to the heroics of Levin and Belew. It's ironic that their dedication to the band and music is what completes the transformation of the quartet into King Crimson. Outstanding are the first public performances of "Thela Hun Ginjeet," "Indiscipline," and a picturesque "Matte Kudasai." The recording used is from a non-professional audience source and is likewise exceedingly well-documented. The final inclusion is from the mid-'90s incarnation of King Crimson and finds the double-trio regrouped in the spring of 1997 to actively search new sonic textures. While the same six musicians came back to the fold, the energy had changed within the combo. Nashville Rehearsals, 1997 is a composite highlight reel of that tentative regrouping at S.I.R. Studios. Many of the ideas presented during these sessions became cornerstones that took King Crimson away from the heavily saturated sound of the double-trio and into the lean sonic circus that re-emerged with The Construkction of Light. "Too Many eeee's" and "Pat's Mechanikal Fives" contain various motifs that can be traced right through the process. "Seizure" also became a staple of future ProjeKcts and King Crimson experiments. It should be noted that the Collectors' King Crimson box sets were specifically designed for the Asian market and are edited with respect to each title's mail-order configurations. "Frame by Frame" from the Moles Club as well as "Nice to Start" and "Trey, Pat & Bill" from the S.I.R.
